Today's Gift

A person's life is what their thoughts make it. ~Marcus Aurelius

How do we think about ourselves? Do we feel unattractive? Do we feel we aren't masculine enough? Do we doubt our ability to perform our roles as friends, spouses, or parents? Such thoughts are common among everyone. There is no problem in having them; they are normal to some extent. But what we do with our thoughts—how we think about what we think—makes a big difference in our lives.

When we think we are odd or different from other people for feeling this way, we become more self-centered. When we don't stand up for our rights as a human to have our doubts and weaknesses, we become even more weak and doubting. When we don't talk about our thoughts and feelings to other people, we become isolated and lonely. We have a right to feel insecure and to know we have weaknesses. We become a stronger person by accepting our doubts. They may still cause some pain but they have lost their power to control us. Just as a repaired seam can be stronger than the original, what was our weakness becomes our strength.

Today, I accept my thoughts of weakness and self-doubt as part of life.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

For this is wisdom; to live, To take what fate, or the Gods, may give. --Laurence Hope

We can't control the events of our lives, but we do have mastery over our attitudes. The chances will be many, today, to react negatively or positively to circumstances we find ourselves in. We can consider that each circumstance has something special in it for us.

Positive expectations regarding the planned as well as spontaneous activities of the day will influence the activity's flow, our involvement with it, and our interactions with the other people involved. A positive attitude seems to breed positive experiences. In other words, we attract into our lives that which we expect. How often do we get up angry, feeling behind when the day has only begun, short-tempered with our children, "ready" for a tough one at work? And we generally find it.

The Serenity Prayer offers us all the knowledge, all the wisdom we'll ever need. We can accept what has to be, change what we can, and not get confused between the two. We can inventory our attitude. Are we taking charge of it? Our attitude is something we can change.

Action for the Day: I won't get trapped today by a negative attitude. I will accept the challenge of turning my day around.

One Day At A Time

Defiance
“When we encountered A.A., the fallacy of our defiance was revealed.
At no time had we asked what our Higher Power's will was for us;
instead we had been telling Them what it ought to be.
No person, we saw, could believe in a Higher Power and defy Them, too.
Belief meant reliance, not defiance."

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Choose truth
by Ralph Marston

Sometimes the truth hurts. Those are the times when it helps you the most.

You can hide from certain truths for a long time, yet they will eventually catch up to you. Along with their clarity will come regret for staying in denial so long.

Seek to be told what is actually true rather than what you want to hear. The sooner you know and acknowledge a truth, the more power you have to successfully deal with it.

You’re not doing anyone a favor by hiding the truth. With respect, compassion, and understanding, speak the truth.

Truth has the power to create value where that value never existed before. Although truth is not the easiest choice, it is the most beneficial and positively transformative choice.

Have the courage to live with truth on your side. At every juncture, choose truth.
