Today's Gift

All of us have unique talents and gifts. No obstacle, be it physical, mental or emotional, has the power to destroy our innate creative energies. ~Liane Cordes

Believing this fully is difficult at times; for some of us, most of the time. But it is true. What each of us can contribute to the world is unlike every other contribution. Each talent is slightly different from every other talent and they are all needed. We are all needed.

Creativity—any kind—writing, photography, cooking, child care, weaving, managing, woodworking—nourishes the self that feels isolated and worthless. And as the self is nourished, it grows; it recovers.

Growth means changing our lifestyle. It means reaching out to others and being there for one another. It means rejoining the human race by giving of ourselves. Our talents are the gifts the human race awaits—needs, in fact. Do we know our talents?

l will search out my secret dreams today. In them lie my talents. l will develop them. Help awaits me.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

I wasn't exactly brought up in one of those Norman Rockwell paintings you used to see on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post. --Reggie Jackson

We have many myths about other people's lives. When we compare ourselves to these stories, we come up short. We have the TV families of Father Knows Best or The Waltons in our minds. We may have stories our father told about his moment of glory and how he met his challenges. Any of these images selects part of the truth and highlights it, creating a myth that might be worthwhile if we don't take it too literally.

Living real life never feels as serene as our fantasies. A myth lifts us up, carries us away to other possibilities, but we should always take it with a grain of salt. A father's recollections or a Norman Rockwell painting romanticizes a piece of reality by omitting the drudgery and confusion of life. Myths are meant as inspirations, not as measurements of our lives.

Action for the Day: The difficulties and confusion I feel may just be part of real life. Serenity comes when I accept the mixture that real life is.

One Day At A Time

Housecleaning
Time after time newcomers have tried to keep to themselves certain facts
about their lives. Trying to avoid this humbling experience, they have turned
to easier methods. Almost invariably they got drunk. Having persevered with
the rest of the program, they wondered why they fell. We think the reason is
that they never completed their housecleaning. They took inventory all right,
but hung on to some of the worst items in stock.

Thought to Ponder
Clear vision for tomorrow comes only after a real look at yesterday.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator
Envision the best
by Ralph Marston

The task is difficult, but that does not mean it is impossible. The problem is complicated, yet somewhere, somehow, a solution can be crafted.

Though the news can be troubling, it doesn’t mean the world is falling apart. Though any given moment may be unpleasant, even painful, still there is so very much to live for.

Acknowledge the troubles, and then look up from them. Look up, look forward, and see the positive possibilities.

Dare to grab hold of the burdensome aspects of life and move them in a more positive direction. Dare to see life clearly as it is, and to fashion some real progress out of it.

It’s easy to complain, to throw your hands up in despair, to hide away, to become bitter and disenchanted. Yet you actually have far more reason to be hopeful, positive, and enthusiastic about the future.

Dare to have faith in the good things you can do, in the goodness you can inspire, and act on that faith. You create your future from the way you see it, so envision the best and make it so.
