Today's Gift

Silence is the element in which great things fashion themselves. ~Thomas Carlyle

There is great power and wisdom in growing to the point where silence becomes our friend. It is in silence that we best listen, and a great portion of life’s best secrets can only be learned in silence.

Those running from themselves and the hurtful lessons of the past fear silence more than any other reality. The fear is I may hear myself in that silence, and surely the sourness of that word would sicken me. Such people are always lonely—whether alone or surrounded by multitudes.

In reality, if we stand still and be quiet, the word we hear softly spoken in the inner court of our own castle is full of beauty and loveliness. If we listen, we will learn that we are not bad; that we are not disgusting, failure-ridden people; and that we are not powerless. Quite the contrary, there is much that is right and noble about us. Alone or lonely—it is a matter of courting silence or not.

Every day I take more pleasure in my own company.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Look at the post as a bullet. Once it's fired it's finished.
—Catherine Bauby

Today is before us as an unformed experience. Yesterday took its own shape, and whatever it was has now gone. Our only opportunities exist in what we will do this day. Perhaps we can enhance the day by starting with a review of yesterday and then letting go. What were the major events in our experiences yesterday? How do we feel about them? Is something left unfinished in our feelings or actions that we need to complete or repair today? Can we take yesterday's experience to build a better today?

We have centered ourselves in this day by reviewing where we just came from. We have taken a spot check inventory. Now we can let go of yesterday and move forward in the present. That does not mean we never think about the past again. It means we build on the past by learning from our experiences and letting them shape our activities now. In that way we draw ever closer into accord with the will of our Higher Power.

Today's Action: I will let go of the past by learning from it. I give myself to shaping today.

One Day At A Time

Greater Than Their Self
On one proposition, however, these people are strikingly
agreed. Every one of them has gained access to, and believes in,
a Power greater than their self. This Power has in each case
accomplished the miraculous, the humanly impossible.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Into stillness
by Ralph Marston

In stillness you can hear yourself think. In stillness you can remember who you are.

In stillness you gain perspective. In stillness you connect to purpose.

If you so choose, every waking hour can be filled with information, entertainment, stimulation, and excitement. But that’s not your best choice.

Give yourself time and space for contemplation. Give yourself the opportunity to peacefully experience the depth of your own being.

All the bright rectangles bursting with color and motion and sound are intoxicating. They evoke reality, yet they are not even close to the sum of reality.

Arrange yourself into some stillness every so often. And reconnect with the deep, rich reality of your own rare and precious existence.
