Today's Gift

A good anger acted upon is beautiful as lightning and swift with power. A good anger swallowed clots the blood like slime. —Marge Piercy

How does it feel when someone tells us we should not speak up or speak out when we need to? Often, it angers us that someone else is telling us what to do. After we have been told we should do something many times, we begin to believe it and forget how we really feel. Even though we have forgotten what we wanted to do, we feel angry, often without realizing it. Such hidden anger can leave us feeling bad without knowing why.

It is important to know when we are angry, and to say so. There are healthy ways of expressing anger without blaming others. Saying we are angry, and thereby claiming it as our own feeling and not something others force on us, is a way to express it, which also affirms our right to be angry.

If there is anger in me today, can I express it correctly?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Words and magic were in the beginning one and the same thing, and even today words retain much of their magical power. --Sigmund Freud

We shape our experiences with the words we use to describe them. Word images create expectations and we naturally move toward them. When a person says, "I can't!" they are commanding their unconscious self to be helpless. When they have a picture in their mind of moving toward their goal, they may say, "It's hard, but I'm going to give it my best effort." If, every time they make a mistake, they mutter berating statements to their self like, "You idiot! You can't do anything right," they are teaching their self to be inadequate.

It's our responsibility in life to use respectful, honest, health- giving words. We can no longer use defeating, shaming, or derogatory words. Our language has a hypnotic effect on us and the people around us. So let's look at our resources today and name them. Let's meet our difficulties with our strength, our patience, and the backing of our Higher Power.

Today's Action: Today, I will call forth images and use words to show I respect myself and others.

One Day At A Time

Willing to Listen
Under the lash of alcoholism, we are driven to A.A., and there
we discover the fatal nature of our situation. Then, and only
then, do we become as open-minded to conviction and as
willing to listen as the dying can be. We stand ready to do
anything which will lift the merciless obsession from us.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step One) p. 24

Thought to Ponder
Learn to listen; listen to learn.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Into the future
by Ralph Marston

You are on a journey into the future. Although you bring your past experiences and values along, you cannot bring the past itself.

You are alive in an ever-changing world. The changes make it impossible to stay where you are, or to go back where you were.

Ahead is unknown territory, and that can be a frightening prospect. Yet everything you’re now comfortable with was once unknown to you, and you’ve handled it well so far.

Tomorrow will call you to awaken in a world that’s different than today. In that world you can grow stronger, expand your skills and understanding, and discover new possibilities.

What you think, what you feel, what you do, can all be better than they were. Yes, it’s inconvenient, challenging, arduous, and yet you’ll thank yourself for rising to the opportunity.

Life moves relentlessly forward into the future. Willingly go with it, and make that future a bright and fulfilling place.
