Today's Gift

If it's sanity you're after, there's no recipe like laughter. —Henry Rutherford Elliot

A smile is the earliest form of communication. A human infant smiles in the first few weeks of life. As the child grows, it learns how to turn the smile into a laugh - a joyous response reflecting pleasure.

A sense of humor, a feeling of fun, and an ability to laugh are all signs of emotional maturity. Healthy laughter frees us; it is the sunshine that makes life's shadows interesting. When we develop the ability to see the humor in a situation, we gain the ability to handle it.

We were born with smiles. They are as much a part of us as our teeth and hair. Polished and cared for, our smiles can grow into a sense of humor that will help us through the painful times.

How can I turn troubles into smiles today?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Happiness is a decision.

We came into this program desperate for help and perhaps solace too. We were more painful than most. Seeing all the smiles and hearing the laughter of the people at the meetings convinced us we were right! Fortunately, we have stuck around long enough to understand where their smiles and laughter are coming from.

The Twelve Steps are suggestions for living one day at a time. When we let the Steps guide our thinking and our actions, we discover that life doesn't have to be painful. Thinking and acting are fully in our control. Staying close to the program can bring us happiness.

Today's Action: I will set a good example for someone else today. I will be living proof of the maxim "Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be."

One Day At A Time

Truth Demonstrated
We have seen the truth demonstrated again and again:
"Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic." Commencing
to drink after a period of sobriety, we are in a short time
as bad as ever. If we are planning to stop drinking, there
must be no reservation of any kind, nor any lurking notion
that someday we will be immune to alcohol.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, (More About Alcoholism) p. 33

Thought to Ponder
When we try to control our drinking, we have already lost control.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Laughing at trouble
by Ralph Marston

When you suffer a setback, find a way to be joyful, not because of what has happened, but because it’s your most powerful response. Seek to laugh at your troubles, not because they are funny or trivial, but as an effective way of taking positive control.

It’s easy to be happy when things are going great. The real power of happiness, however, comes in times of difficulty. A dismal, dejected attitude will only hold you back. A positive, joyful approach can move you quickly ahead.

Sure it’s tough to be positive when there’s no reason to be. It’s difficult, and yet it is possible. Accept for a moment that it is possible, and that it is beneficial. Then ask yourself if you would like to reap that benefit.

Find your joy not in mere circumstances, but rather with that part of you which transcends the circumstances. Live that joy with vigor and sincerity, and you’ll begin to see how even the most difficult of situations can be turned in your favor.

Seek to truly lift up life and make it impossible for life to get you down.
