Today's Gift

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear not absence of fear. —Mark Twain

It is not unusual to feel afraid. It is unusual, however, to hear anyone admit to feeling afraid. Sometimes we think there are some people who are so cool and calm that they never feel afraid. This may make us think we're not as good because we know how often we feel afraid. This is why it is important to think about what courage really is. It is not the absence of fear. Courage is not letting fear stop us from doing what we need to do.

We might have to get up in front of a group to give a speech. We could give in to our fear and not give the speech, or we could admit our fear to those who love us, and then go ahead and do the best we can. To go ahead in the face of fear is courage.

What am I afraid of?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Free man is by necessity insecure; thinking man by necessity uncertain. --Erich Fromm

We hear comments like, "Hang in there!" "Don't quit now," "Don't give up the ship!" When our outlook is gloomy and pessimistic, we should remember we are not in charge and we are not all knowing. We cannot predict what will be around the next corner. If a difficult problem looms before us, we cannot be sure what help might also be there for us to meet the problem.

Our compulsion for control tempts us to quit and give ourselves over to defeat. Then the outcome would be settled and predictable. We no longer would have to live with the insecurity of not knowing the future. When we are tempted to indulge in our disfunctional ways, or to return to a relationship that isn't good for us, or to face a painful problem, it helps to recall that change is a basic fact of life. However stressful this moment is, it will change. Not at our command, but it will change. We aren't in control of outcomes, but we can choose now to "hang in there" and to give our energy only toward positive solutions.

Action for the Day: May I have the serenity to accept the process and the courage to be true to my part. Outcomes I will leave for the future.

One Day At A Time

Fellowship
We are people who normally would not mix. But there exists among us
a fellowship, a friendliness, and an understanding which is indescribably
wonderful. We are like the passengers of a great liner the moment after
rescue from shipwreck when camaraderie, joyousness and democracy
pervade the vessel from steerage to Captain’s table. Unlike the feelings
of the ship’s passengers, however, our joy in escape from disaster does
not subside as we go our individual ways.

Thought to Ponder
Alcoholics Anonymous is the only place in the world where you
can walk into a room full of total strangers and reminisce.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Letting go
by Ralph Marston

Letting go of discouragement is no more difficult than holding on to it. And letting go is so much more empowering.

It takes an enormous amount of time, energy and attention to remain bitter or angry or disillusioned. Let it go and move on ahead. Whatever has happened is a matter of history. Whatever is to come is a matter of choice.

Now is when you make that choice. Now is when you can decide to stop giving your energy to what is past and start making the most of what will be.

Freedom is much, much closer than you might think. Imagine being free of the things that hold you back. It takes so little effort to let them fall gently away from you. And be free to truly live.
