Today's Gift

Look, the wind vane fluttering in the autumn breeze
Takes hold of certain things that cannot be held. ~Feng Chih

When we think we are losing our grip, we have good reason to look up. Consider the moon suspended in the sky, how it continues to come and go, follows its natural law, and never really loses face. Consider the sun, the stars, the seasons, how they refuse to abandon us, to let go of their hold on our lives. And come closer to home. We can marvel at the magic of small efficient things—the toaster and stove, the light in the room, the words in a good book that are permanent, faithful, and clear. We can consider how music, without saying a word, still speaks to us, and how a few friends, maybe miles away, continue to hang on to the strength of our small and faithful words.

We can keep in mind that we are part of a complex and loving system, and our grip can never be lost.

How do I see my unity with my surroundings today?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Who's not sat tense before their own heart's curtain? --Rainer Maria Rilke

Meeting our Higher Power and ourselves is the universal spiritual process. Sitting before the curtain of our hearts may feel as awesome to us or as frightening as anything we will ever do. When we first admit to ourselves a deeper truth, we feel these overpowering tensions. For some of us, this is a necessary step, which leads to self-knowledge and inner peace. We feel unique, different, alone, and maybe even crazy. For the first time, we are listening to our inner truth rather than outside messages.

Let's think for a moment about today's tensions and strains. Are we really aware of their source? Perhaps they are created by the disturbing honesty of our hearts? We may find our spiritual growth in yielding to the truth. When we are cynical about spiritual experience or when we minimize the importance of our soft-spoken inner wisdom, we are avoiding the truth from our hearts. And we miss the possibility of becoming strong from within.

Action for the Day: Today, I will live through the tension and fear of my honesty to reach the point of peace with myself.

One Day At A Time

Pride and Guilt
In pride I could say, "Look at me, I am wonderful." In guilt I would moan,
"I'm awful." Therefore guilt is really the reverse side of the coin of pride.
Guilt aims at self-destruction and Pride aims at the destruction of others.
This is why I see humility for today as that safe and secure stance
midway between these violent emotional extremes.
- AA Grapevine, June 1961 (Humility for Today, Bill W)

Thought to Ponder
The difference between pride and humility:
Pride is who is right. Humility is what is right.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Stronger through every weakness
By Ralph Marston

You have your weaknesses, as does every person. Make sure each weakness serves as a challenge to become better, not as an excuse to fail.

Let each weakness prompt you to refine, control, improve your behavior. Don’t ever allow any of them to justify negative behavior.

Choose never to see yourself as a victim of your weaknesses or difficulties or your unique situation. Though the burden is very real, it does not have to define you or compromise your integrity.

Some weaknesses you can work your way out of, and some you cannot. Yet what you can always do is build within yourself enough strength to more than offset each weakness.

No one is perfect, circumstances are rarely ideal, and difficulties always appear. Even so, with all the imperfections, there are plenty of good, valuable, beautiful things you can do.

Identify your weaknesses, work on them, but don’t let them make you any less than the best you can be. Choose instead to rise to their challenge, and to grow stronger through every weakness.
