Today's Gift

What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. —Hugh Mulligan

We show self-respect in how we choose to spend our time. Do we give tasks the time required for our best efforts? Or do we feel unworthy of quality work? Do we have a right to stop working and just play? Are we worth spending time with - just ourselves, or do we feel meaningful time is only spent with others? Are we worth caring enough about to enjoy bathing, grooming, or getting haircuts? Do we care enough about ourselves to see a dentist or a physician when needed?

Choices about how we use our time are basic ethical and creative choices. Beyond self-respect and care, we need to put time into our day for nourishing and enriching our spirits. We do that by reading something thoughtful or meaningful, talking to a friend about the events and feelings of our lives, listening to music, fixing a pleasant meal, exercising, and giving unpaid time and energy to worthwhile causes.

I am grateful for the gift of another day, and I will live it creatively and respectfully.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Procrastination is the thief of time. ~Edward Young

When we have a problem with putting things off, we seem to add to our troubles by mentally flogging ourselves. We know we are losing time. We criticize ourselves for our irrational behavior.

Whether we are putting off an important task in our lives or letting many little undone jobs accumulate, we could benefit from stopping the self-criticism and asking ourselves for the spiritual message in our actions. Perhaps we need some quiet time to do absolutely nothing. Maybe our perfectionism is paralyzing us. Is an "all or nothing" attitude telling us if we can't do the whole job right away, there is no point in beginning? Unexpressed anger may be blocking us from doing what we need to do.

Whenever we find ourselves doing things that seem irrational we can ask, "What is the message from my Higher Power in this behavior?" This question will carry us much further toward spiritual growth than the mental criticism we are tempted to do.

Action for the Day: Today, I will do what I can within the limits of one day, and I will stay in communication with my Higher Power.

One Day At A Time

Daily Reprieve
It is easy to let up on the spiritual program of action
and rest on our laurels. We are headed for trouble if
we do, for alcohol is a subtle foe. We are not cured of
alcoholism. What we really have is a daily reprieve
contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, (Into Action) p. 85

Thought to Ponder
The alcoholic is in no greater peril than when he takes sobriety for granted.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Love for life
by Ralph Marston

Don’t let your earnest desire to save the world end up poisoning it. Step back, dial down your ego, be sure your own house is in good order.

Take full responsibility for you, before you allow yourself to even have an opinion on how anyone else should live. Be quick to offer generosity, compassion, understanding, and slow to direct judgment.

No one person has all the answers. That includes you, me, each and every leader, philosopher, commentator.

History is massive and your perspective is miniscule. If looking at life doesn’t fill you with humility and gratitude, look again.

There is much good you can do, right here, right now. Just don’t compromise your potential achievement by the need to prove a point.

Live life well, and let live. Love, and let your love for life and all who live it guide your every choice.
