Today's Gift

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear not absence of fear. —Mark Twain

It is not unusual to feel afraid. It is unusual, however, to hear anyone admit to feeling afraid. Sometimes we think there are some people who are so cool and calm that they never feel afraid. This may make us think we're not as good because we know how often we feel afraid. This is why it is important to think about what courage really is. It is not the absence of fear. Courage is not letting fear stop us from doing what we need to do.

We might have to get up in front of a group to give a speech. We could give in to our fear and not give the speech, or we could admit our fear to those who love us, and then go ahead and do the best we can. To go ahead in the face of fear is courage.

What am I afraid of?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory. ~Friedrich Engels

Overplanning, overthinking, and too much talking often hinder the actions that can bring real growth. We know this, and yet we still get trapped, usually by our fears that we’ll not proceed perfectly.

Life is the process of making progress. We learn by doing, not just by thinking. We can make our forward steps more easily when we ask our Higher Power to share the journey, but we have to put one foot in front of the other. And that usually leads us to someone else in need.

How many times have we felt stuck or depressed or obsessively fearful, only to discover our head clearing and our heart calming when we got out of the house, out of ourselves, and focused on someone else?

Helpful actions energize us and give us hope. They connect us to our Higher Power and make all the difference in our daily spiritual progress.

Action for the Day: I will not sit and obsess today. I’ll go out and find someone in need.

One Day At A Time

Sane and Sound Ideal
We reviewed our own conduct over the years past. Where had we been
selfish, dishonest, or inconsiderate? Whom had we hurt? Did we unjustifiably
arouse jealousy, suspicion or bitterness? Where were we at fault, what should
we have done instead? We got this all down on paper and looked at it.
In this way we tried to shape a sane and sound ideal for our future sex life.
We subjected each relation to this test—was it selfish or not?
- Alcoholics Anonymous, (How It Works) p. 69

Thought to Ponder
Right actions for the future are the best apologies for wrong ones in the past.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Through your fears
by Ralph Marston

Look in the direction of your fears. You will likely see a path toward new success and achievement. Those things which you fear represent significant challenges for you, and in challenge there is much value.

The things that challenge you most will also compel you to grow the most. The places you’ve always feared to go are filled with unexplored territory. There’s no telling what treasures you could find there.

A few of your fears will genuinely keep you out of trouble. Most of them, though, are not there to stop you but to prepare you. The more you confront your fears and work through them, the more new and fertile ground you’ll uncover. There’s a whole rich and wonderful world waiting just on the other side of your fears.

Heed your fears by adequately preparing yourself. Then march right on through those fears toward the golden rewards which are beyond them.
