Today's Gift
Action for the Day: I will soak up the day like a sponge. My education is within my control.
Attitudes
We are careful never to show intolerance or hatred of drinking
as an institution. Experience shows that such an attitude is not
helpful to anyone. Every new alcoholic looks for this spirit among us
and is immensely relieved when he finds we are not witchburners.
A spirit of intolerance might repel alcoholics whose lives could have
been saved, had it not been for such stupidity.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. 103
Thought to Ponder
Love and tolerance of others is our code.

Always a way through
The hopeful person sees success where others see failure, sunshine where others see shadows and storm. —O. S. Marden
When wise people say, "Hope springs eternal," they are reminding us that no matter how great are the obstacles, the hope of winning out in the long run still exists. Hope is our friend when all else has failed. When we have strength of character and an energetic mind, hope always flourishes.
We discover that, at the very brink of despair, we will find courage to keep trying as long as there is hope for success. After all, what have we got to lose? Without hope, we have no chance, anyway. Our chance for glory comes when we keep trying even though all seems lost. Our hearts remain strong and brave when hope reminds us that challenges last until a game is over.
What light of hope can I keep burning within me today?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day
Keep It Simple
Learning stamps you with its moments. --Eudora Welty
We never stop learning. We absorb information every waking moment. And while we sleep, we process what we encounter during the day. The conclusions we reach about these daily lessons will likely be based on the perception that dominates our lives. Do we perceive our experiences as for our good or for our undoing?
Since learning is ongoing, we are fortunate to have a more positive context within which to interpret our experiences. Alcoholics Anonymous, as well as other Twelve Step programs, offers us a set of guidelines to live by, which helps us interpret every moment.
We can anticipate what lies ahead, or we can dread it. What we learn from each experience reflects our attitude. Our commitment to the Twelve Steps determines it.

Always a way through
by Ralph Marston
There is always a way through. Calm down, take a breath, back away from the drama and find that way.
Life’s realities are not always pleasant or comforting or convenient. Accept reality, and at the same time, refuse to be stopped by it.
Steady your nerves as the situation crashes down around you. Then pick up the pieces and do something useful, helpful, good, and valuable with them.
Keep your cool when tensions are hot. Engage your steady hand to navigate through rough and roiling passages.
There is always a way through. And on the other side, great value, opportunity, a new, stronger perspective.
With grace and confidence, see beyond the disruptions of the moment to a positive vision of what can be. With calm determination, lead the way there.
