Today's Gift

I've always tried to control everything and every aspect of my life, and this is maybe the biggest lesson I've learnt with motherhood - you just can't control everything, and I'm much more relaxed now about unexpected changes and things that happen. --Margherita Missoni

Stop trying so hard to control things. It is not our job to control people, outcomes, circumstances, and life. Maybe in the past we couldn't trust and let things happen. But we can now. The way life is unfolding is good. Let it unfold.

Stop trying so hard to do better, be better, and be more. Who we are and the way we do things is good enough for today.

Who we were and the way we did things yesterday was good enough for that day.

Ease up on ourselves. Let go. Stop trying so hard.

Today, I will let go. I will stop trying to control everything. I will stop trying to make myself be and do better, and I will let myself be.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Let Go and Let God.
--Twelve Step slogan

Some days we might ask ourselves, Is it worth it? We feel alone. No one seems to care. Life seems hard. Recovery seems hard.

This is when we need to slow down and take a look at what's going on. We're feeling this way because we're off our recovery path. We may be back into wanting people to see things our way, or do things our way. We want control.

Remember, all problems are not our problems. All work is not our work. We can't have everything the way we want it. But we can do our part and let go of the rest. Then we can feel better.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, help me remember my only work today is to do Your will for me. It is not my job to be You.

Action for the Day: I'll talk with my sponsor or a program friend today. I'll talk about how to deal with things that seem to pull me down.

One Day At A Time

Control and Manipulation
When we habitually try to manipulate others to our own willful desires,
they revolt, and resist us heavily. Then we develop hurt feelings, a sense of
persecution, and a desire to retaliate. As we redouble our efforts at control,
and continue to fail, our suffering becomes acute and constant. We have
not once sought to be one in a family, to be a friend among friends, to be a
worker among workers, to be a useful member of society.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 53

Thought to Ponder
When I choose the behavior, I choose the consequences.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

You can control you
by Ralph Marston

You cannot control the weather. You can control you.

You cannot control other people. You can control you.

You cannot control the market, the government, the culture, the seemingly random hand of fate. What you can control is what you think, how you see and feel about life, and what you do.

You can control you, and that is more than enough for great fulfillment. You control you, and with that control you can forge a positive result out of any situation.

In what you have gained, in what you have lost, there lives the same opportunity. Through purposeful self-direction and control, you can make it into something great.

You control the beautiful, unique, creative bundle of possibilities that is you. Every day, every situation is your chance to transform that control, that power, into meaningful value.
