Today's Gift
The "shoulds" of our lives can be found all around us. We should wear our seat belts. We should not cry. We should go to our meetings. These "shoulds" usually serve as good guides for us, but they can intrude upon us. If we give them power, they only condemn us and give no useful help. At times we jump toward the "should" because we don't have the courage to live with the insecurity of being human.
If someone at work gets an unfair shake, it takes courage to speak up and say what we think. We may have an impulse to reach out to a stranger, but it takes courage to do it. When an inner feeling emerges from our honesty, fear may prompt us to avoid it, and we need to call on our courage. That is how we fulfill the uniqueness of each of us.
Action for the Day: I am alive as a man and a human being. I will not shy away from opportunities to express my humanity.
Spiritual Experience
Most of our experiences are what the psychologist William James calls
the "educational variety" because they develop slowly over a period of time.
Quite often friends of the newcomer are aware of the difference long before
he is himself. He finally realizes that he has undergone a profound alteration
in his reaction to life; that such a change could hardly have been brought
about by himself alone.

Thought to Ponder
The solution is simple. The solution is spiritual.

Consider this possibility
Be patient with the faults of others; they have to be patient with yours. --Our Daily Bread
How do we feel when someone we know makes a mistake? What happens when the boss makes an error and we have to work overtime to straighten it out? How do we feel when a cashier overcharges us, the post office loses our package, or the mechanic doesn't fix a problem?
Most of us become angry. Since we have been brought up from childhood to believe we are victims, it seems only natural in adult life to feel the same way. We imagine all those people had it in for us; they were all in league somehow to make us suffer.
But everybody makes mistakes. Who among us is perfect? We have made many mistakes in our lives that have probably brought inconveniences to others. If we can learn to treat the faults of others with patience and understanding instead of anger and resentment, we may find others treating us accordingly.
I can overlook the mistakes of others as I would want them to overlook mine.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator
by Ralph Marston
Always, possibilities surround you, your work, the people in your life, your dreams for the future. Many of those possibilities, you have never considered.
When you and another person strongly disagree, consider this possibility. In some very significant ways, you might both be right.
When every attempt fails to bring fruit, when every path is blocked, consider this possibility. There is some other path, some other strategy, some other approach with which you will succeed.
When you’re angry, annoyed, offended by what someone else has done, consider this possibility. That person’s behavior is their problem, and is much more about them than it is about you.
You’ve seen many possibilities become real, yet you haven’t seen them all, not by a long shot. In every situation, be assured that there are many more possibilities than you’ve ever imagined.
Life becomes challenging, and what has served you well in the past may no longer work. Even so, take heart, for there’s always another great possibility ready and waiting for you to run with it.
