Today's Gift

Today was like a shadow. It lurked behind me. It's now gone forever. Why is it that time is such a difficult thing to befriend? —Mary Casey

Each passing minute is all that we are certain of having. The choice is ever present to relish the moment, reaping fully whatever its benefits, knowing that we are being given just what we need each day of our lives. We must not pass up what is offered today.

Time accompanies us like a friend, though often a friend denied or ignored. We can't recapture what was offered yesterday. It's gone. All that stands before us is here, now.

We can nurture the moment and know that the pain and pleasures offered us with each moment are our friends, the teachers our inner selves await. And we can be mindful that this time, this combination of events and people, won't come again. They are the gift of the present. We can be grateful.

We miss the opportunities the day offers because we don't recognize the experiences as the lesson designed for the next stage of our development. The moment's offerings are just, necessary, and friendly to our spiritual growth.

I will take today in my arms and love it. I will love all it offers; it is a friend bearing gifts galore.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope. --Martin Luther King, Jr.

Disappointment and Frustration

How can disappointments be opportunities to grow? When we feel thwarted, frustrated or empty it is difficult - but not impossible - to see the positive side of our pain.

Most disappointments come from a sense of failure when our expectations of ourselves or others are not met. If we can work through our initial response or source of frustration that lies within ourselves, we are taking the right steps toward turning our hurts and fears into growth-filled experiences.

Do we have unrealistic expectations of ourselves or approval of us? Have we sold ourselves short by placing our entire self-worth on our jobs, paychecks, or possessions? Have we accepted negative feelings about ourselves, or do we see ourselves as capable human beings?

Action for the Day: TODAY I will probe the sources of my self-esteem. I will seek my happiness within myself, not in other people, places, or things.

One Day At A Time

Our Behavior
To escape looking at the wrongs we have done another, we resentfully focus on the wrong
he has done us. This is especially true if he has, in fact, behaved badly at all.
Triumphantly we seize upon his misbehavior as the perfect excuse for minimizing or forgetting our own.
Right here we need to fetch ourselves up sharply. . .
Let's remember that alcoholics are not the only ones bedeviled by sick emotions.
Moreover, it is usually a fact that our behavior when drinking has aggravated the defects of others.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

When strength is a necessity
by Ralph Marston

There are times in life when strength becomes a necessity. Times when strength is not optional.

At such times you have no magic escape route, nothing to fall back upon. And, you discover how much strength you can gain, and utilize, when you must.

Any situation, any experience, any setback, any success, has the potential to make you stronger. Too often that potential goes unrealized, for it is easier to just let it float on by.

Yet there are times when you have no choice, when you must find a way to pull new strength out of every moment. And at those times, you do.

Consider how amazing that is. Just the thought, just remembering you can, is enough to plant fresh seeds of strength within you.

Every day arrives full of opportunities to build strength. Take those opportunities, even when you don’t have to.
