Today's Gift

My formula for living is quite simple. I get up in the morning and I go to bed at night. In between I occupy myself as best I can. ~Cary Grant

We need balance in our life. Both quiet times for introspection and meaningful activities that take us outside of ourselves enhance our emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Too much self-absorption and too little attention to other people can impoverish us emotionally. Likewise, always seeking distractions and having to constantly be in the thick of things can cut us off from our deeper spiritual resources.

The least stressful and most productive plan for our daily recovery is to strive for moderation in all our activities and simplicity in our self-analysis. Our inner wisdom will guide us when we acknowledge the direction from our Higher Power that emerges in the quiet places of our mind. Then we can give our attention to other people and better acknowledge, praise, and love them.

I will find time for both quiet meditation and involvement with others today.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple
One Day at a Time ---AA program slogan

One Day at a Time reminds us to live in a sane, natural way. It reminds us we can't control the past. It reminds us we can't control the future. We can live only in the present. We have only the moment. We have only today.

Before recovery, our worries about the past and the future put stress in our lives We need to live in a way that doesn't put us in danger. We need to live in a way that lets us enjoy things. We need to live in a way that lets us stay close to others, ourselves, and our Higher Power.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, teach me to really live One Day at a Time.

Action for the Day: Today, I'll keep reminding myself that I have the moment. No more, no less. Am I using my moments the way my Higher Power wants me to?

One Day At A Time

The Fact
The fact was we really hadn't cleaned house so that the grace of our Higher Power
could enter us and expel the obsession. In no deep or meaningful sense
had we ever taken stock of ourselves, made amends to those we had
harmed, or freely given to any other human being without any demand
for reward. We had not even prayed rightly. We had always said,
"Grant me my wishes" instead of "Thy will be done."
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Two) p. 32

Thought to Ponder

Trust the Universe. Clean house. Help others.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator
Balance
by Ralph Marston

A good, productive day of work enables you to have a great rest at night. A great rest at night enables you to have a good, productive day of work.

Life is a cycle of effort and rest. The effectiveness of each depends on the other. You cannot cheat this cycle. Sleep all night and day and you’ll feel awful. Work (or play) all day and night and you’ll be worthless the next day.

Maximum effectiveness requires balance. You’ve got to work hard, and you’ve got to stop along the way to rest and relax. Sometimes you can be more effective in your work, by doing less of it. Sometimes you can get a better rest, when you work a little harder.

Try to drive your car with only three tires, and you’ll appreciate the need for balance. Get out of balance, and nothing works right. To live effectively, you must have balance -- in your diet, in your schedule, in your relationships, in your ideas, in your viewpoints. If you go too far out in one direction, you could topple over.

Think balance, and get the most from life.
