Today's Gift

Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us every day. ~Sally Koch

A fundamental rule of good mental health is to be helpful to others. We can do that by telling our story: where we were and how far we have come. But helpfulness is an attitude. We can cultivate this attitude, looking for ways to be helpful while not taking on a caretaking role. Generosity of spirit in all our dealings with others, without looking for anything in return, creates a feeling of connection with others. Helping others can also dispel depression and self-pity.

Today, I will look for ways to be helpful and generous to others.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day
Keep It Simple

Showing up is 80 percent of life.---Woody Allen

Life is full of things we don't want to do. Yet when all parts of us( mind, body, spirit) show up, things go okay. By being there, we can learn about ourselves and help others.

Showing up means we care about our program. It means we speak up at meetings. It means we care about our family, our friends, the world. It means we listen when a friend has a bad day. It means seeing ourselves in others. It means we talk to someone who bothers us. Showing up means we laugh when something seems funny. It means we cry when we feel sad. We're important, and we need to bring our mind, body, and spirit with us---wherever we go. Have I learned to show up, all of me?

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, help me show up for my life. Help me show up to do my part in Your plan today.

Today's Action: As I go through my day, I'll think about how I'm showing up for my life. I'll be proud of myself for doing my part.

One Day At A Time

Instinct Run Wild
Alcoholics especially should be able to see that instinct run wild in themselves
is the underlying cause of their destructive drinking. We have drunk to drown
feelings of fear, frustration, and depression. We have drunk to escape the guilt
of passions, and then have drunk again to make more passions possible. We
have drunk for vainglory—that we might the more enjoy foolish dreams of pomp
and power. This perverse soul-sickness is not pleasant to look upon.

Thought to Ponder
The gritty pain of alcoholism is the traction of recovery.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator
Helping others
by Ralph Marston

Helping others helps you, at the very deepest level. Giving real value serves to create real value in your own life.

By providing encouragement, you receive encouragement. When you teach, you learn.

Each day is rich with opportunities for you to make a positive difference in the lives of those around you. And it is through genuinely enriching the lives of others that you find true richness in your own.

Right here, right now, there is a beautiful way to give of yourself, and to make the world a better place. Choose to do so, and immediately feel the benefits begin to manifest.

You have the chance today to change lives for the better. It’s difficult to imagine anything that could be more fulfilling than that.

Reach out, give a hand, make a difference, and offer a kindness. The lives you lift will most certainly include your own.
