Today's Gift

Character is what you are in the dark. ~Dwight L. Moody

We’re not born with character. We have to build it through patience, self-esteem, and humility. Character is never revealed by what we think or say, no matter how wise our thoughts or our words may be sometimes. Character is what we are underneath all the layers of our defenses that we show the world.

Character is an outer show of an inner glow that reaches others or pleases ourselves. It is a reserve force for all of us. Its usefulness goes beyond talent. Its greatest energy comes from personal relations with others.

Character permits us to welcome healthy criticism. It is a force that respects truth and develops will and spirit. It is positive. It stresses action and makes all of these qualities clear to others.

Let me examine my character and develop it with patience, self-esteem, and humility.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple
Make yourself an honest [person], and then you may be sure that there is one rascal less in the world. ---Thomas Carlyle

Honesty does not mean saying all we think or feel. Many of our thoughts and feelings are only with us for a minute. They are not always the truth. For example, saying to someone you love, "I hate you!" in the middle of an argument can destroy things.

Honesty means living by what is true to us. Then we choose when and how to say things to others.

Think of honesty as the air we breathe; it's what keeps us alive, but it can get polluted and kill. It must be treated with respect and care.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, help me know the power of honesty. Help me speak it with care and respect.

Action for the Day: Before I speak today I'll ask myself: "Is this true? Am I speaking because this needs to be said?"

One Day At A Time

Gaining Humility
To get completely away from our aversion to the idea of being humble,
to gain a vision of humility as the avenue to true freedom of the human
spirit, to be willing to work for humility as something to be desired for
itself, takes most of us a long, long time. A whole lifetime geared to
self-centeredness cannot be set in reverse all at once.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Seven) p. 73

Thought to Ponder
Humility begins with 'please' and 'thank you.'

Daily Motivation
Ego let go
by Ralph Marston

It is one of the most difficult things you can do. And yet, it is very simple, easy and effortless.

It is one of the most powerful things you can do. And yet, when you do it you give up the need and the desire for power.

What is it? It is letting go of your own ego.

When you can bring yourself to get beyond your own ego, you raise yourself to a whole new level of awareness, experience and effectiveness. When you can think, live and act unconstrained by the limitations of your ego, the possibilities are truly endless.

Your worries, your fears, your doubts, anxieties, disappointments and hesitation to move forward are all sustained by your ego. Imagine the power of leaving all those limitations behind.

Spend a few minutes, a few hours, or an entire day unconcerned about what others will think, or what’s in it for you, or whether something offends you or not. Feel the freedom, delight in the ability to accomplish, and explore possibilities that you may never before have even known about.

Once you decide to let go of your ego, it’s a very simple thing to do. And it will truly change your world for the better.
