Today's Gift

When you do something you are proud of, dwell on it a little, praise yourself for it. —Mildred Newman

Each one of us is very good at something. Maybe it's drawing or sports where we display talent. Maybe we're good in math or at giving reports. A few people are talented at being good listeners or helpful friends. To recognize our own talents we may need help from others. It's always so much easier to see our faults, or the ways we don't meet our own expectations.

But the fact is we are all skilled in many areas of our lives. To accept praise--better yet, to quietly give it to ourselves--is a sign of healthy growth.

What things have I done well lately?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

When you aim for perfection you discover it’s a moving target. ~George Fisher

In our desire for control, we seek the ultimate control of perfection. We try to relieve our anxieties and self-doubts by achieving it, but in fact we perpetuate our unease by seeking what cannot be attained. Some of us say, “I’m not a perfectionist because I am far from perfect,” only proving that we are always measuring ourselves with that yardstick.

The way to resolve this dilemma is to get a different yardstick. Instead of measuring how far we are from perfect, we could measure whether we are learning anything new. Or we can ask ourselves if we have continued to get back on the path when we veer off course. Knowing we will make mistakes, we can ask ourselves if we take responsibility for them. Knowing some things will go wrong, no matter how well we plan, we can include in our plans a vision to accept mistakes as part of the package.

Action for the Day: Today, I will try to learn from whatever happens, and when something goes wrong, I will accept it and deal with it.

One Day At A Time

Character and Comfort
But whenever we had to choose between character and comfort, the
character-building was lost in the dust of our chase after what we
thought was happiness. Seldom did we look at character-building as
something desirable in itself, something we would like to strive for whether
our instinctual needs were met or not. We never thought of making honesty,
tolerance, and true love of others and our Higher Power the daily basis of living.

Thought to Ponder
Character is what I am; reputation is what people think I am.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Get it done
by Ralph Marston

If you can get it perfect, that’s great. If you can’t get it perfect, or even close to perfect, go ahead anyway and get it done.

When others support your efforts, that’s great. Yet even if you have no assistance or encouragement, go ahead and get it done.

Whether you have all the time in the world or just a few minutes available here and there, get it done. Whether you have all the resources you need or you have to improvise, get it done.

Start with what you have, from where you are, and get it done. The only opportunity you’ll ever have for action is the moment you’re in.

Once you have the idea, the intention, the plan, put it into action. Otherwise it’s just an empty wish that will eventually turn into a bitter regret.

You have the desire, you have this moment, you have knowledge, experience, and capability. Put it all to good use right now and get it done.
