Today's Gift

I'm delighted that the future is unsure. That's the way it should be. ~William Sloane Coffin

Some of life's richest moments are the most unexpected: the old friend met by chance, or the new one discovered when neither of us was really looking; the toy at the bottom of the toy box, rediscovered and loved anew; the book, the flower, the shaft of light we were in the right place at the right time to notice and embrace.

It is important to dream and plan, to work toward goals, to mark the milestones we pass on life's journey. No less important, though, is to open ourselves to the unexpected joys awaiting us every day.

I will be ready, today, to expect the unexpected.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

My mother was dead for five years before I knew that I loved her very much. --Lillian Hellman

Each day it helps us to remember that we are always changing. Whatever is most clear to us today or is most prominent in our feelings - the difficulties we may be having with parents, spouses, the worries we have about our children or close friends - is a part of an unfolding of events we cannot foresee. Just when we think we know exactly the direction things are going, they surprise us with change. Relationships continue to evolve and mature as we do. Even when separated from loved ones, our relationships may improve because we continue to grow.

Our task for this day is to be honest with ourselves, to be respectful to others, and to stay open to our Higher Power. Continuing to go forward, we put one foot in front of the other. We are changing internally, and circumstances around us are changing too. We remain hopeful for the future because outcomes are in the hands of our Higher Power and the Universe.

Action for the Day: I cannot predict the direction of my growth. I will simply remain true to myself today and stay open for surprises.

One Day At A Time

Personality Change
"It has often been said of A.A. that we are interested only in alcoholism.
That is not true. We have to get over drinking in order to stay alive. But
anyone who knows the alcoholic personality by firsthand contact knows
that no true alky ever stops drinking permanently without undergoing a
profound personality change."
- As Bill Sees It, (Letter, 1940) p. 1

Thought to Ponder
If I don't change, my sobriety date will.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

In the living
by Ralph Marston

Somewhere ocean waves ease onto the shore just as they have for millions of years. Somewhere an owl takes flight as the last light of day fades from the western sky.

A child stares in wonder at the falling rain. A woman bakes bread as she has for decades.

Life is in the living. And there is always something good to live.

Simple moments, epic occasions, and the experiences in between are all made of the same substance. Rather than assigning a category to what’s going on, just live it for all the goodness it is.

Here and now is your occasion to be, to see, to know, to feel, to act. There is no limit on the good you can make from it.

Stop second-guessing what may or may not be, and live the full and accessible reality of what is. Beauty, joy, goodness and meaning are yours to experience, if you will.
