Today's Gift
Compassion is the ability to see how it all is. ~Ram Dass
Compassion means caring about other people. When we remember to ask others how it is for them—right now—that is compassion. We listen. We “Live and let live.” We keep on caring. We try to understand. We accept.
As compassionate people we accept each other, even though we all see things in different ways. We have different ideas about spirituality, family life, and politics. We have different things happening in our lives that bring us joy or pain. We are in different times of our lives—being students, being parents, being together with another person, being alone, learning what to do with our strength and energy, or learning how to survive our weakness and depression.
When we see these differences, we learn to give to others when we can. We learn to ask for help when we need it. We learn to listen to others, to be there for them. And we learn to share our troubles and let them be there for us. That’s how compassion works.
Higher Power, let me be there for others today with compassion. Help me to treat others with the same dignity and compassion that you treat me.
When I hear about other people’s troubles today, I will really listen and treat them with compassion.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day
Keep It Simple
We come to this day with a choice of whether to be for something or against it. Shall we put energy into what we seek and admire or shall we give our energy to opposition and resistance of what we dislike? If someone asks a favor, we have a choice to resent and resist the intrusion or to engage with the person and see where it might lead. If a project we are working on is frustrating, we can wallow in criticizing it or try to get a clearer picture of what will work and what we want.
Criticizing may be a helpful first stage in learning, but it is seductive because it holds little risk and we feel safe doing it. In that comfort we forget to go for ward to create what we really want. Our negative energy, when we are seduced by it, creates negative results. When we look back upon today, we will admire those choices that risked creating something positive.
Action for the Day: Today, I will not give my energy to denouncing but to creating what I believe is worthwhile.

One Day At A Time
Step Eleven suggests prayer and meditation. We shouldn’t be shy
on sharing about this matter of prayer. Better people than we are using
it constantly. It works, if we have the proper attitude and work at it.

Daily Motivation
Excerpt of The Daily Motivator
by Ralph Marston
The time to be thankful for what you have, is while you still have it. If you wait until after it’s gone, what would have been gratitude instead becomes remorse.
Are there good things in your life right now, that you’ll desperately miss when you no longer have them? Now is the time to appreciate them, make good use of them, protect them from harm.
It’s natural to focus on what’s wrong, on what doesn’t work, out of a desire to make improvements. Yet the whole reason you’re able to improve whatever doesn’t work, is because of all the other things that do work.
Yes, problems command your attention, as well they should. But don’t let them blind you to the vast goodness that continues to support your life.
The most important time to nourish your body, is when you are ill. The most important time to be appreciative of your blessings, is when you’re faced with difficult problems.
You are living proof that, for the most part, life works very well. You can make it work even better by building on the goodness that’s already there.
