Today's Gift

Believing that we deserve better is the first step.

Some people say there is magic in believing. Our expectations are powerful; they are self-fulfilling, in fact. And if our expectations are generally negative, we’ll find the circumstances of our lives pretty dismal too.

The good news is that when we expect better experiences, we’ll also find them. How does this work? Surely it requires more than just believing. But it really doesn’t. When we look for the good in every situation, we quite selectively see it. Making the choice to live this way means we’ll regularly see opportunities for opening doors to better lives.

The formula is simple: Our Higher Power’s plan for our lives is always for our benefit. Some part of that plan may be difficult to bear at first, but when we remember to believe that it is a positive opportunity, we’ll feel its potential for changing our lives.

I will monitor what I believe about every experience I have today. Looking for opportunities will help me see them.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Whatever happens to you, once you have hope you will survive. ~Lailah Gifty Akita

What was it like for us as children? The word education means “leading out from”…away from ignorance, defenselessness, anxiety, and fear. Were we educated in this sense, or were we neglected or even abused?

Childhood especially should be a time of growth and hope. When memories of childhood are tarnished, bitterness and resentment follow, and these in turn can lead to erratic or addictive behavior. As addicts, we know what it was like to be pushed away, exploited or even abused. We hated it, and it made us distrustful and angry.

Now, in recovery, we feel the power of education as we learn to leave behind the ignorance, fear, and pain of our childhood. We come to feel the joy of nurturing ourselves and caring deeply for those around us.

Action for the Day: I want to continue my own “education” as I emerge from ignorance, mistrust, isolation, and fear.

One Day At A Time

Prayer
In A.A. we have found that the actual good results of prayer are
beyond question. They are matters of knowledge and experience.
All those who have persisted have found strength not ordinarily
their own. They have found wisdom beyond their usual capability.
And they have increasingly found a peace of mind which can stand
firm in the face of difficult circumstances.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Eleven) p. 104

Thought to Ponder
Today I pray over the things that I used to drink over.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Push past despair
by Ralph Marston

You are not perfect, yet you can move your world in a positive direction. Whatever happens, you can offer new positive energy to life.

You get angry, frustrated, disappointed, but you don’t have to perpetuate those negative emotions. You can transform their power into beneficial action, into determination and commitment.

As difficult and frightening as life can sometimes be, you are fully able to push past the despair. Reach deep inside, connect with what you know to be good and right, true and helpful.

Many circumstances are beyond your influence. Even so, you can be a positive force for the people and situations around you, and that’s not nothing.

Indeed, improvement in the world never comes from grand schemes or forceful decrees. It comes from people who choose, again and again, to follow their best possibilities.

You are always able to make that choice. Push past anger, past judgment, past despair, and push life in a more positive direction.
