Today's Gift

May you live all the days of your life. ~Jonathan Swift

Indeed, life is much like a game—both a deadly serious one and one that demands laughter, relaxation, and the ability to play. Either way, life demands attention.

There is much of life that is truly exciting and fascinating—are we watching for it? There is hilarity and humor—do we see it? There are aspects of life that are touching and full of heroism—are we open to seeing them?

All these are not only present in some general, nebulous way about life, but about our lives! Right here where we live, in our lives today, there will be the hero and the goat, there will be disappointment and reason for wild celebration, there will be the beautiful and the horrible. The soap opera is not out there; it is right here with us, in us, all around us. The task is to be present in our own lives, to get our heads out of others’ reality, and to find the enormous meaning and vitality of our own.

Life is precious. Today, I will not take my life for granted.

Secrets of the New Happiness

Success in living.
Most of us know whether other people are truly happy. What's odd, however, is that we don't often try to practice the things that bring happiness to others. Often, the happiness we're striving for is really a form of excitement____ trying to be continuously stimulated so as not to be bored or depressed.

Excitement does not create happiness. We find true happiness when we learn to serve others in right ways; that is, without demanding their gratitude or some other recognition. We also find true happiness in self-acceptance___ being generally satisfied with our lot in life and grateful for the self-improvement we've found. We find happiness, too, in keeping occupied with useful activities that place demands on our energies and abilities.

There is no such thing as a happy alcoholic who is still drinking. There are also recovering people who have not yet found happiness. But the program unlocks the happiness, and we do have members whose happiness is an example to others.

Action for the Day: I can be happy one day at a time. I will make the choice to be happy today, and to let tomorrow come in its own time. Nothing can interfere with today's happiness.

One Day At A Time

Natural Desires
We want to find exactly how, when, and where our natural desires
have warped us. We wish to look squarely at the unhappiness this
has caused others and ourselves. By discovering what our emotional
deformities are, we can move toward their correction. Without a
willing and persistent effort to do this, there can be little sobriety
or contentment for us.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Realistically positive
by Ralph Marston

Will a positive attitude always bring positive results? No, because circumstances beyond your control may very well get in the way. So why make the effort to stay positive? Because even though you are subject to very real limitations, your best option is always to be the best you can be. That means keeping yourself focused on the positive possibilities, and doing everything in your power to manifest those possibilities.

There will be disappointments, to be sure. When they happen, pick yourself up quickly and get back in the game. Keep your eyes focused on the goal, through every setback. Though circumstances may appear to conspire against you, keep on going.

Reality can be harsh. And yet, even in the midst of that harshness, life is sweet when you refuse to let it defeat you. Be realistic and be positive too. It’s always the best option.
