Today's Gift

Toleration is the greatest gift of the mind. ~Helen Keller

Facing conditions we would like to change, letting go of people we wish were different, takes growth, patience, tolerance. We're so easily enticed into thinking we'd be happier, "If only he'd change," or "If I had a better job," or "If the kids would settle down." Yet we carry the seed of happiness within us every moment. Learning tolerance for all conditions will nurture that seed.

Intolerance, impatience, depression, in fact, any negative attitude is habit-forming. Many of us continue to struggle with the habits we've formed throughout our life. Bad habits must be replaced with new, good habits. We can develop a new behavior, one that pleases us, like smiling at every stranger in a checkout line. We can repeat it in every line. It becomes a habit and a good one.

Toleration of others opens many doors, for them and for us. It nurtures the soul, ours and theirs. It breeds happiness. Those of us sharing this are truly blessed. We're learning about love, how to give it and how to receive it.

There are so many eyes I'll look into today that don't know love. I will give some away with unconditional tolerance. It's a gift—to myself and others.

Keep It Simple

The reality is that changes are coming....they must come. You must share in bring them. --John Hersey

Change. It's scary. It's hard. It's needed. Sometimes it feels bad. But one thing is for sure: it keeps on happening. Just when our life seems settled, it changes. We can't stop life. We can't stay this age forever. The world changes. Life moves on. There are always new things to do and learn. Changes means we're always beginners in some ways. We need to ask for wisdom and courage. We get it by listening, by praying, by meditating. When we ask, our Higher Power will teach us to be part of good changes.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, help me believe that Your plans call for good changes.

Action for the Day: Today I'll think about the changes in my life. I've lived through a lot. I'll be okay when more changes come, with my Higher Power's help. I can keep on growing.

One Day At A Time

An Opportunity
We find it a waste of time to keep chasing a man who
cannot or will not work with you. If you leave such a
person alone, they may soon become convinced that they
cannot recover by their self. To spend too much time on
any one situation is to deny some other alcoholic an
opportunity to live and be happy.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, (Working With Others) p. 96

Thought to Ponder
A.A. is not for people who need it, it's for people who want it.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Misunderstood
by Ralph Marston

Often you will not be fully understood. Don’t let that stop you from doing the useful things you can do.

No one will ever understand you as completely as you would like to be understood. Yet even when you’re a little misunderstood, or a lot, you can do plenty of good.

It’s great to work with people who understand you well. It’s also possible, though, to make progress with those who misunderstand you to varying degrees.

Be clear with yourself about your standards, set them high, and live up to them. Rather than feeling you must explain those standards, let your valuable results be sufficient explanation.

Seek to understand, to be understood, and step forward with confidence in your purpose. Never let your creativity or ambition be stifled by the fear of being misunderstood.

Do your best, and let others do with it what they will. Give your best, and let others make of it what they make of it.
