Today's Gift

Only people who have joyfully accepted themselves can take all the risks and responsibilities of being themselves. —John Powell

If we have ever gone to school with a black eye, we know how embarrassing it can be. We feel self-conscious and ill at ease. Friends come up to us one after another to ask how we got it. We may want to stay away from people until the eye is better. All of us have things about ourselves we have a hard time accepting. It doesn't have to be as unusual as a black eye. We may think we're too big, too little, too slow, not good readers, not good looking enough, or not popular enough.

We may need to talk about these things with someone else, so these bits of ourselves we don't accept won't limit our freedom to grow. By talking to another, we may find those traits aren't noticed by anyone but ourselves. We may also find that what we once thought of as weak points can be turned to strengths.

What weakness can I turn to a strength today?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

There are as many ways to live and grow as there are people. Our own ways are the only ways that should matter to us. ~Evelyn Mandel

Wanting to control other people, to make them live as we'd have them live, makes the attainment of serenity impossible. And serenity is the goal we are seeking in this recovery program, in this life.

We are each powerless over others, which relieves us of a great burden. Controlling our own behavior is a big enough job. Learning to behave responsibly takes practice. Most of us in this recovery program have behaved irresponsibly for much of our lives. Emotional immaturity is slow to depart, but every responsible action we take gives us the courage for another—and then another. Our own fulfillment is the by-product of the accumulation of our own responsible actions. Others' actions need not concern us.

Action for the Day: Today, I will weigh my behavior carefully. Responsible behavior builds gladness of heart.

One Day At A Time

Watches Over Us
The moment we catch even a glimpse of our Higher Power's will, the moment
we begin to see truth, justice, and love as the real and eternal
things in life, we are no longer deeply disturbed by all the seeming
evidence to the contrary that surrounds us in purely human affairs.
We know that our Higher Power lovingly watches over us.

Thought to Ponder
Reliance on our Higher Power enables me to match calamity with serenity.

One Day At A Time

Highest potential

by Ralph Marston

You are worthy of the best life has to offer, so take life up on that offer. Decide right now to think, to speak, to feel, to act in ways that fulfill your highest potential.

There’s more to this day than just getting through it. The moments, the hours, the people, the situations, can all add great richness to your life.

Sure, life can be messy, troublesome, painful, inconvenient. It’s tempting to hide away from most of the turmoil in a routine that’s comfortable and familiar.

But that’s not going to bring you much joy, or richness, or fulfillment. You’re capable of more than merely getting by, and you deserve the experience of exploring those capabilities.

Venture out beyond what you’ve already learned, experienced, and accomplished. Explore new territory and embrace exciting new possibilities.

Give yourself the opportunity to become an even better version of yourself. Live in the direction of your highest potential, and raise that potential ever higher.
