Today's Gift

To know oneself, one should assert oneself. ~Albert Camus

We learn about ourselves by bumping up against something solid. By throwing ourselves into a project, meeting an obstacle we can't overcome, perhaps making some mistakes, we learn what we are capable of and what we are not. We are not here to live a comfortable and placid life. Our task is to grow and learn, to make a contribution, and to have some tranquility while we do. The only way we can achieve those goals is to assert ourselves, find out where the solid limits are, and assert our right to make mistakes in the process.

When we first learn to drive a car, we over steer and hit the brakes too hard or too softly. In the process we learn how to feel what is just right. When we are learning to ask for what we need and to make a place for ourselves, we may ask too demandingly at times. That is not bad. It is how we will learn to do it well.

Today, I will have opportunities to assert myself. I will take the risks required to learn.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Though we be sick and tired and faint and worn--Lo, all things can be borne! --Elizabeth Chase Akers

What bothered us most a year ago? A month ago? Even a week ago? It's probably that whatever it was, we were obsessed with it, certain that our futures were ruined, that there was no reasonable solution. It's also probable that we feared we simply couldn't survive the complexity of the situation. But we did. And we always will be able to survive any and all difficulties. We are never, absolutely never, given more than we can handle. In fact, we are given exactly what we need, at any given time.

We have many lessons to learn. Fortunately, we have the guidance of the Universe to guide us through the lessons. We need mainly to remember what we are powerless over, that there is a power greater than ourselves, and that life will become simple; we'll need no extra homework when we've turned it over to the care of our Higher Power.

Action for the Day: Whatever my problem today, I will let my Higher Power have it. A solution is in the making. I'll see it just as quickly as I can let go of the problem.

One Day At A Time

Self-Appraisal
Must A.A.'s spend most of their waking hours drearily rehashing their sins
of omission or commission? Well, hardly. The emphasis on inventory is heavy
only because a great many of us have never really acquired the habit of accurate
self-appraisal. Once this healthy practice has become grooved, it will be so
interesting and profitable that the time it takes won't be missed. For these
minutes and sometimes hours spent in self-examination are bound to make
all the other hours of our day better and happier.

Thought to Ponder
Inventory-taking is not always done in red ink.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Problems are not the problem
by Ralph Marston

No situation is going to solve all your problems. But that’s okay, because the existence of problems is not really such a problem.

Much of what makes life good is the satisfaction of dealing with its problems. If there were no problems, such satisfaction would be impossible.

Go ahead and be thankful for the problems. Then get to work dealing with them in creative and enriching ways.

Let go of the fantasy that you can somehow make your way to a perfect utopia that’s free of all problems. Instead, use your creative energy to envision and implement ways to thrive and to spread joy even when problems keep cropping up.

Rather than letting the problems nag you and disappoint you, allow them to energize and inspire you. Appreciate the power they have to direct your focus toward what truly matters.

Look confidently out at life, and see every problem as an opportunity to enrich your experience. Then go out among those problems and reap the rich rewards of a life well lived.
