Today's Gift

What matters? Only the flicker of light within the darkness, the feeling of warmth within the cold, the knowledge of love within the void. ~Joan Walsh Anglund

If we were lost at sea, surrounded by darkness pierced only by one distant blinking light, we would follow that light. As we followed it, it would become clearer and brighter until it brought us safely to land.

Sometimes when we're depressed, we feel as though we're lost on a dark sea. But there is always a flicker of light for us. It may be prayer, or the love of a special friend. When we see that light, we need to move toward it. Whatever brings us hope is like that flicker of light. The more we seek it, the clearer and brighter the light will become.

When we are cold and our bodies begin to numb, we must keep moving. Movement will keep us alive. When our emotions are numb, we need people or things or places that will warm our hearts. When no one else is around, hot baths or a favorite treat can bring the warmth of our own self-love into our lives when we need it the most.

How can I brighten my inner light today?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

A family member may not be a friend, but a friend will always be family. ---Benjamin Franklin

Many of us come from families that aren't very healthy for us. Many families have lots of love but aren't able to show it. Maybe our parents argued or drank to much. When we share our recovery with them, they may not seem happy with us. They may be doing the best they can, but they don't understand our new way of life.

We can have the love we wanted, but it might not come from our family. We can choose healthy friends to be our new "family." Some friends may seem like the sibling we always wanted.

A friend can give us advice we never got from our parents. We can have a full, healthy "family life" after all.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, help me choose good friend who will help me to be the best that I can be.

Action for the Day: The best way to have a friend is to be a friend. What will I do today to be a friend.

One Day At A Time

Thoroughness
Whatever the defects, they have finally ambushed us into
alcoholism and misery. Therefore, thoroughness ought to be
the watchword when taking inventory. In this connection,
it is wise to write out our questions and answers. It will be
an aid to clear thinking and honest appraisal. It will be the first
*tangible* evidence of our complete willingness to move forward.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Live hope
by Ralph Marston

Fear builds the unknown into a crippling enemy. Hope, on the other hand, inspires you to bend the unknown in your favor.

Seek hope, hold hope, live hope, give hope, be hope. There may be scant justification for hope, yet there is always great reason for hope.

Because hope does not merely describe what’s going on. Hope pushes you to change the situation for the better.

Hope adds confidence, energy, persistence to your actions. Hope connects those actions to meaningful purpose.

True hope is not an empty wish. True hope embodies a powerful strategy.

On its own, hope achieves nothing. Yet with hope in your heart, you can do whatever is necessary to get anything accomplished.
