Today's Gift

You have to treat yourself. Life is too short to deprive yourself of things. --Nathalie Emmanuel

Give Ourselves What We Deserve

Often, our instinctive reaction to something we want or need, "No! I can't afford it!"

The question we can learn to ask ourselves is, "But, can I?"

Many of us have learned to habitually deprive ourselves of anything we might want, and often things we need.

Sometimes, we can misuse the concept of gratitude to keep ourselves unnecessarily deprived.

Gratitude for what we have is an important concept. So is believing we deserve the best and making an effort to stop depriving ourselves and start treating ourselves well.

There is nothing wrong with buying ourselves what we want when we can afford to do that. Learn to trust and listen to yourself about what you want. There's nothing wrong with buying yourself a treat, buying yourself something new.

There are times when it is good to wait. There are times when we legitimately cannot afford a luxury. But there are many times when we can.

Today, I will combine the principles of gratitude for what I have with the belief that I deserve the best. If there is no good reason to deprive myself, I won't.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

It seems to me that I have always been waiting for something better - sometimes to see the best I had snatched from me. --Dorothy Reed Mendenhall

Gratitude for what is prepares us for the blessings just around the corner. What is so necessary to understand is that our wait for what's around the corner closes our eyes to the joys of the present moment. We have only the 24 hours ahead of us. In fact, all we can be certain of having is the moment we are presently experiencing. And it is a gift to be enjoyed. There is no better gift just right for us than this moment, at this time.

We can, each of us, look back on former days, realizing that we learned too late the value of a friend or an experience. Both are now gone. With practice and a commitment to ourselves, we can learn to reap the benefits of today, hour by hour. When we detach from the present and wait for tomorrow, or next week, or look to next year, we are stunting our spiritual growth. Life can only bless us now, one breath at a time.

Action for the Day: I can live in the present if I choose to. Gentle reminders are often necessary, however. I will step into my life, today. It can become a habit, one I will never want to break.

One Day At A Time

Honesty
Somehow, being alone with our Higher Power doesn't seem as embarrassing
as facing up to another person. Until we actually sit down and talk
aloud about what we have so long hidden, our willingness to clean house
is still largely theoretical. When we are honest with another person,
it confirms that we have been honest with ourselves and with our Higher Power.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, (Step Five) p. 60

Thought to Ponder
Honesty is the absence of the intent to deceive.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Be good to yourself
by Ralph Marston

Do something nice for yourself today. Take time to give yourself a special treat.

In order to contribute to life and provide value to others, you must first connect to the value that is within you. To connect with and appreciate that unique inner value, be good to yourself.

Think of the things that feel good, and right, and fulfilling to you. Look past all the superficial things undertaken or acquired only to impress others, and focus on what is sincerely you.

Give yourself the gift of being totally and joyfully you. Let go of your concerns, your worries, your pretenses and anxieties, and truly enjoy the moment you’re in.

By being good to yourself, you’ll be much better equipped to deal with whatever difficult situations the world sends your way. By being good to yourself, you vastly increase the value you can provide to others.

On a regular basis, take the opportunity to be good to yourself. And it will spur you on to become the best that you can be.
