Today's Gift

A bird came down the walk: he did not know I saw. He bit an angle-worm in halves, and ate the fellow, raw. ~Emily Dickinson

We must look very different to the birds than we do to each other. Likewise, birds seem different to us than they do to each other. Neither the way we see birds or the way they see us is the "right" way. They are simply different ways of seeing.

If we could turn birds into people so they would see things the way we do, eat the way we do, and think the way we do, we would lose the idea of flying. The knowledge that flight is possible is a gift birds have given us.

We do well to remember this when we get upset at others for not doing things the way we would. Varieties of styles, appetites, and ideas are gifts that enrich the world and bring more possibilities into our lives.

When others disagree with me today, will I accept their gift?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Chaos demands to be recognized and experienced before letting itself be converted into a new order. --Hermann Hesse

The forces of chaos and forces of order are always at work in the world. While many things are being built up, many are wearing down. It is a good thing, because life would be very boring in an unchanging state. But the chaos we met in our lives was often extreme and unusually destructive. We had to recognize it and feel the pain of it before we could build a new order. Looking back we can see that our First Step was just such an event.

All people have small chaotic events in their lives every day. If we take a moment and reflect on our present lives, we can certainly become aware of some ways in which things are in disarray. By simply letting ourselves know it in this moment, we get ready for the new order to begin.

Action for the Day: I will pray for courage and honesty to see the chaos which exists today. Help me become ready for the new order to evolve.

One Day At A Time

Direction
On awakening let us think about the twenty-four hours ahead.
We consider our plans for the day. Before we begin, we ask our Higher Power
to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from
self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives. Under these conditions
we can employ our mental faculties with assurance, for after all
our Higher Power gave us brains to use. Our thought-life will be placed on a
much higher plane when our thinking is cleared of wrong motives.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, (Into Action) p. 86

Thought to Ponder
Prayer asks the question. Meditation listens for the answer.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

What’s inside
by Ralph Marston

You can’t always control what arrives at your life’s doorstep. Yet you can choose how far to let it in, and what to do with it once it’s inside.

You certainly will not avoid every problem, and you wouldn’t want to anyway. Because problems push you to grow stronger, and give you access to new opportunities.

Yet no matter how many problems you encounter, or how big they are, they never have to get to the heart of who you are. You never have to allow any of the problems to define your life.

You can respond to every difficulty with fresh, new determination. You can build new strength and hold on to it, while letting go of any impulse to become cynical or discouraged.

What’s outside is what you often must deal with. What’s inside is up to you to choose.

Your attitude, your perspective, your inner hopes, dreams, and faith are yours to decide. As life unfolds, let each experience add positive value to the deepest, most enduring part of you that truly matters.
