Today's Gift
What a person thinks of them self, that is which determines, or rather indicates, their fate. -Henry David Thoreau
Let us think of ourselves as made of dust, and allow us to be as proud of it as if it were true. For dust is everywhere. We see it in solemn rooms streaked by sun, dancing like fine angels in a cathedral light. It is the stuff of life. And it drifts down on fancy tables where the richest people eat. It cannot be denied a place. And it returns time and time again like the seasons. It is one of the wonders of the world. And when no one sees or cares, it finds a secret corner in which to keep a solitary peace. It intends no harm. We find it at home on old leather books, the ones that preserve our noblest thoughts. And from where we stand, it seems that even the stars are made of it.
When we feel low, unworthy, or useless, let's remember that these feelings are only a small but important part of us, that even great things are made of small parts and that we, as whole beings, are always greater than the sum of these parts.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day
Keep It Simple
It is senseless to speak of optimism or pessimism. The only important thing to remember is that if one works well in a potato field, the potatoes will grow. If one works well among men, they will grow. That's reality. The rest is smoke. --Danilo Dolci
We can get so mired in our pessimism and negativity! What is the point in it? We even get committed to our pessimism, and we challenge the world - or the Universe - to give us reason for hope. In our pessimism, we don't notice we have chosen a negative place to stand. Recovery means loosening our grip on negativism. We are then free to do the work we need to do. We can slowly take the risk of believing that positive things will happen too.
Any person can see the results in their own life. When we work well at this program, when we are faithful to it, we do grow. We see this truth in one another's lives. The work is not always easy. We sometimes wish to avoid it or find a reason to not even try. But there is no doubt, when we look around us, that the effort is rewarded with fulfilling lives.
Action for the Day: I will ask my Higher Power to please remove pessimism from me so I may continue my work.

One Day At A Time
There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation,
and prayer. Taken separately, these practices can bring much
relief and benefit. But when they are logically related and
interwoven, the result is an unshakable foundation for life.

Thought to Ponder
Today I pray over the things that I used to drink over.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator
by Ralph Marston
What’s about to happen is going to be great. As each moment of life unfolds, tell yourself that, again and again.
You can expect whatever you choose to expect. So choose an expectation that will raise you to your most effective state.
Before every encounter, before each task, each experience, repeat the affirmation to yourself. This is going to be great.
Your positive expectation will not magically cause events to line up in your favor. What it will do is improve your confidence, increase your energy, and direct your focus to the best possibilities.
Expect great things and you’ll see opportunities for making great things happen. Get in the habit of making the best out of whatever comes your way.
Keep telling yourself that this is going to be great. And give yourself a powerful, positive advantage in meeting every situation.
