Today's Gift

An empty lantern provides no light. Self-care is the fuel that allows your light to shine brightly. – Unknown

"All too often," confesses a gal, "I get so caught up in hurry and worry that I ignore my own needs. I push myself so hard to get this and that done that I make myself physically ill before I have the sense to rest. There's got to be a better way!"

Some of us, it seems, have to learn the importance of rest and relaxation the hard way. We push ourselves to the limit, often to the point of illness or injury, before we allow ourselves to stop.

We can avoid this vicious circle if we realize our limitations. One of those limitations is found in the law of "Supply and Demand." We cannot meet demands if we have depleted our resources. Just as a fire cannot burn without fuel, so our bodies and minds cannot function without food and rest.

Today – before I drive myself to the point of complete exhaustion, I will set aside as much time as I need to fill my depleted energies. I will get more rest, participate in an enjoyable activity, or have an inspiring conversation with a friend to renew my strength and courage.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Self-knowledge and self-improvement are very difficult for most people. It usually needs great courage and long struggle. --Abraham Maslow

This is a simple program but it isn't easy. We cannot take the principles we learn and thereby possess them as if we were taking a class or reading a book. We need to live them. We can only get this program by participating with others who are also on the journey. Gradually we absorb it into every fiber of our being. This takes time and dedication.

The honesty required is sometimes frightening and painful. Any man who remains faithful to this program has great courage and deserves deep respect. But we do not have to wait long to begin receiving the rewards. New freedoms, good feelings, and friendships quickly develop, and we are promised in this program to continue growing and to receive more benefits throughout our lives. What rewards have come from our courage and struggle?

Action for the Day: I will give much to my spiritual growth because it gives much to me.

One Day At A Time

The Power
The unselfishness of these people as we have come to know them, the
entire absence of profit motive, and their community spirit, is indeed
inspiring to one who has labored long and wearily in this alcoholic field.
They believe in themselves, and still more in the Power which pulls
chronic alcoholics back from the gates of death.
- Alcoholics Anonymous, p. xxvii

Thought to Ponder
The task ahead of us is never as great as the Power behind us.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Self interest
by Ralph Marston

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher,
the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner,
but from their regard to their own interest.
-- Adam Smith

Take care of yourself first. No matter how much you may want to give to others, if you don’t have anything yourself, then you have nothing to give.

Self interest is not selfish. It is highly responsible. Taking care of yourself means being responsible for yourself, and there is nothing selfish about that.

Self interest is a powerful creative force. Because she knows she will be rewarded, the scientist works diligently to develop a new medicine. Because he knows he will be rewarded, the investor finances a new venture.

The more you take care of your self, of your own needs and desires, the more you have to contribute to life. And the more you have to contribute, the more you become. It is an upward spiral that begins when you take responsibility for your own life, and begin to look out for your own interest. Everyone benefits when you take care of yourself.
