Today's Gift

I will, I will accept myself
With hope and fear and wonder
And what I have joined together
Let no person put asunder.
—Dory Preven

There is a wonderful freedom in acceptance. When we accept ourselves, with all our imperfections, we can then begin to accept others just as they are. This is especially exciting when we apply this discovery to our own families. A family is like a bouquet of flowers arranged in a common vase. Each flower is different. One might be blue, one white, one a rose, one a chrysanthemum. But each adds to the beauty of the whole bouquet and enhances the vase that holds it.

It isn't important that we know why one flower is blue and one white. We don't have to understand how a rose becomes a rose to appreciate the arrangement. We just accept it for what it is. Acceptance of others does not mean agreement or approval. How boring if we only accepted those who reflected our own ideas and opinions! How dull to look upon a bouquet of exactly the same flowers.

Today, will I accept the differences between us as part of our beauty together?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

It takes more courage to reveal insecurities than to hide them, more strength to relate to people than to dominate them, more "personhood" to abide by thought-out principles rather than blind reflex. Toughness is in the soul and spirit, not in muscles and an immature mind. --Alex Karras

In our culture, being an adult often means being tough and not showing feelings. We realize in this life of recovery that those are silly and immature myths, even though we see them repeatedly on TV, on billboards, and in newspapers.

When we are told these things repeatedly, it makes an impact on us. So we need to hear from each other that this is not the way we wish to live. We don't admire these attitudes, and we don't believe the stories. Truly courageous people know themselves. They have been around enough to have depth to their souls, to let themselves love, and to feel the pain of life.

Today's Action: Today, I am grateful to know and share my feelings and to have genuine relationships with those I love.

One Day At A Time

Step Five
We have admitted certain defects; we have ascertained in a rough way what
the trouble is; we have put our finger on the weak items in our personal inventory.
Now these are about to be cast out. This requires action on our part, which,
when completed, will mean that we have admitted to our Higher Power, to ourselves, and
to another human being, the exact nature of our defects.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Believe in yourself
by Ralph Marston

You deserve to be more confident than you are. Your self doubts are not nearly so well-founded as you think.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Let go of those persistent doubts, and let confidence take their place.

Whether you’ve ever even realized it, you are an achiever. Though occasionally life can make you feel helpless, you are actually someone who is very good at finding ways to get things done.

It’s not arrogant or presumptuous to believe in yourself. Indeed, it is an acknowledgment of reality and the starting point for making all of life better.

The fact is, you are skilled and resourceful, capable and experienced. When you want to be, you can be passionate, inspired, persistent and highly effective.

No one benefits when you hold yourself back. So go ahead, believe in yourself, give yourself the confidence you deserve, and do those great and wonderful things that are yours to do.
