Today's Gift

Each day is different and has a surprise in it, like a Cracker Jack box. --Alpha English

It's interesting to ponder the notion of surprise. Not every one of them is all that welcome. Hearing bad news about a friend or having a special trip we'd been counting on canceled can leave us dismayed and worried, right along with surprised. Seeking solace from others while cultivating a willingness to accept that all things happen for a reason gives us the armor we need to make the best of every situation and disappointment.

It's an interesting image to think of each day as a box of Cracker Jacks. The moments of our lives have been very tasty. Some were sweet, some were a bit salty, and there were always wholly unexpected moments, the surprises that we were ready for even though we may not have imagined as much. We can look forward to the same daily agenda throughout the remaining years.

Does it help to know that there is a divine plan unfolding in our lives? Many of us find comfort in that. All of us can cultivate that belief.

I am ready for my surprise today! It is meant for me at this time.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

I wake each morning with the thrill of expectation and the joy of being truly alive. And I'm thankful for this day. --Angela L. Wozniak

Being open to the day's offering, all of it, and looking for the positive experiences therein, becomes habit only after a firm commitment and dedicated practice. Today is special for each of us.

These next twenty-four hours will be unlike all others. And we are not the persons we were, even as recently as yesterday. Looking forward to all of the day's events, with the knowledge that we are in the care of our higher power, in every detail, frees us to make the most of everything that happens.

We have been given the gift of life. We are survivors. The odds against survival in our past make clear we have yet a job to do and are being given the help to do it. Confidence wavers in all of us, but the strength we need will be given to each of us.

In this day that stands before me, I can be certain that I'll have many chances for growth, for kindness to others, for developing confidence in myself.

Today's Action: I will be thoughtful in my actions today. They are special and will be repeated no more.

One Day At A Time

Humility and Hope
The whole emphasis of Step Seven is on humility. It is really saying to us
that we now ought to be willing to try humility in seeking the removal of
our other shortcomings just as we did when we admitted that we were
powerless over alcohol, and came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves
could restore us to sanity. If that degree of humility could enable us to find
the grace by which such a deadly obsession could be banished, then there must
be hope of the same result respecting any other problem we could possibly have.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 76

Thought to Ponder
Humility is not a station we arrive at; it's a way of traveling.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Major investment
by Ralph Marston

The time that appears in your life today cannot be hidden in a vault and saved for later. You get precisely one chance to make use of it, and that chance is now.

The clock is ticking, the moments are already passing. Make the commitment to invest your time well.

Consider how you can use your time today to create the most positive, significant impact on your life and your world. Then focus your attention and your efforts in that direction.

How do you claim maximum value from the moments as they relentlessly pass? By filling them with purpose, with action, with meaning, a positive perspective, and a love for the possibilities.

Today offers you plenty of time to make great progress. That time is too valuable to waste even a small bit of it.

Realize the great value of what you have, and constantly keep in mind what you can do with it. Today is a major investment of your precious time, and now you can give it the best you have.
