Today's Gift

Nature is the Art of the Gods. --Sir Thomas Browne

The most relaxing activities may be the ones in which we do absolutely nothing. And if we can do nothing amid the sounds of nature - birds chirping, water bubbling in a brook, the wind rustling in the trees - so much the better. During these moments, away from the noise and chaos of our fast-paced, stress-filled lives, we commune most directly with nature and our Higher Power. Without distraction, our bodies can totally relax; there is no danger, no need to be ready to respond to anything. All we have to do is be.

If we live in the city, we can take refuge in its parks, a quiet room, or the library. We can listen to the sounds of nature on records or cassette tapes. The point is to slow down, to smell and taste the rain, to hear the chirping of crickets and the rustling of leaves and our own thoughts. When we remember nature, we remember - our bodies remember - that we are a part of nature, part of something greater than ourselves.

Today help me hear the sounds of nature and let them comfort and heal me.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

One is happy as a result of one's own efforts, once one knows the necessary ingredients of happiness--simple tastes, a certain degree of courage, self-denial to a point, love of work, and above all, a clear conscience. Happiness is no vague dream, of that I now feel certain. --George Sand

We are as happy as we make up our minds to be, so goes the saying. But happiness is the result of right actions. We prepare for it daily. We chart our course. Many of us have to first determine where we want to go before we can decide on the chart. We have perhaps passively floated along for years. But now the time is right to navigate, to move toward a goal.

We may have fears about moving ahead. We can be courageous, however. Strength is at hand, always, if we but ask for it. We can make a small beginning today. And every day, we can do at least one thing we need to do to bring us closer to our goal. Accomplishment, however small, nurtures good feelings. Happiness is the byproduct.

Action for the Day: Today is wide open. I will decide on a course of action and move ahead. All around me help is available for the asking.

One Day At A Time

Causes and Conditions
Though our decision was a vital and crucial step, it could have little
permanent effect unless at once followed by a strenuous effort to face,
and to be rid of, the things in ourselves which had been blocking us.
Our liquor was but a symptom. So we had to get down to causes and conditions.

Delay is the deadliest form of denial.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Take a break
by Ralph Marston

Many of your best ideas arrive when you’re not trying to have them. Take a few moments, or a few days, and take a break.

To sharpen your focus, relax it for a while, on a regular basis. Give your mind time and space to make sense of all it takes in.

Living with purpose does not mean you must tightly schedule every millisecond. Spend time acquainting yourself with the world outside your own agenda.

You rest better when you’ve worked hard. You work better when you’ve rested well.

Give your life, your work, your spirit, the benefits of balance. Allow focused intention and relaxed serendipity to support each other and to elevate all that you experience.

Work, play, determination, relaxation, focus, curiosity, effort, and peaceful contemplation. A rich life is a balance of all these good things.
