Today's Gift

That life is a fragile shell on the beach I have thought of before. This year I will be thinking big basic wonders as if I were just born. --Naomi Shihab Nye

The big basic wonders about our origin, and that of the stars, must still occur to us all, even though we're grown up and knowledgeable about astronomy and human reproduction. The germination of a seed is still much more wonderful, in a strict sense, than the mere electronic marvel of a calculator that makes twelve thousand computations in a second.

Do we ever let ourselves simply wonder? Do we still open ourselves to the awe that filled us once, when we first realized the vast intricacies of the solar system or of human physiology?

Every great ritual surrounds a story that is wonderful: the presence of a Higher Power; the deliverance of a people; the transformation of life or death. It's appropriate that we should respond to them with a thrill of wonder. Wonder is a gift; it contains the germs of reverence and of knowledge.

Life is frail and intricate, and it contains everything I need for fulfillment.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Once I knew that I wanted to be an artist, I had made myself into one. I did not understand that wanting doesn't always lead to action. Many people had been raised without the sense that they could mold and shape their own lives, and so, wanting to be an artist (but without the ability to realize their wants) was, for some of them, only an idle fantasy, like wanting to go to the moon. --Judy Chicago

There are probably not many of us who grappled with life as straight on as Judy Chicago did. It is likely we didn't understand that we could mold and shape our lives. How lucky we are to be learning that now with the help of the Twelve Steps and one another. Each day we are confronted with many opportunities to make responsible choices, reasonable decisions. These choices and decisions are the molders, the shapers, of who we are becoming. Our identity is strengthened each time we thoughtfully make a choice. The action we take through making each choice gives our identity more substance--our wholeness as a person is guaranteed through these choices.

Action for the Day: Many opportunities to make choices will arise today. I can be thoughtful and make choices that will lead to my greater wholeness.

One Day At A Time

Recovered
He accepted the plan outlined in this book. One year later he called to see me,
and I experienced a very strange sensation. I knew the man by name, and partly
recognized his features, but there all resemblance ended. From a trembling, despairing,
nervous wreck, had emerged a man brimming over with self-reliance and contentment.

Thought to Ponder
It's not what I know in recovery that keeps me sober. It's what I Do that keeps me sober.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

A sense of wonder
by Ralph Marston

No matter what age you are you can always enjoy one of the most valuable aspects of being young -- a genuine and exhilarating sense of wonder.

There is no shortage of wonder in life. It never runs out. Unfortunately, as we grow older we too often tend to tune it out, to not even look for it. But it’s always there, just over the horizon. When you think you’ve seen it all, heard it all, experienced it all, what reason is there to get out of bed in the morning?

The fact is, you haven’t even come close to seeing it all. There’s always some new wonder waiting to be discovered, some new thing that will excite your passion and ignite the joy of your youth just as surely as if you had traveled back in a time machine.

There is a whole universe out there waiting to be discovered. You’ve only seen a tiny fraction of it. A lifetime worth of wonder awaits you. Wonder is an essential part of childhood, but it’s not just for children. Anyone, at any age, can add joy and meaning to any day by experiencing the sense of wonder that comes with each new discovery.
