Today's Gift

Happiness is like manna; it is to be gathered and enjoyed every day. —Tryon Edwards

Life is like a winding path surrounded by flowers, butterflies, and delicious fruit, but many of us spend much of life looking for happiness around the next corner. We do not bend to enjoy the happiness, which is ours for the taking just at our feet.

In our desire to reach the "pot of gold," the complete and lasting happiness we all want to fill our lives, we ignore anything which doesn't seem worthy of such a large ambition, or which can't give us the whole thing all at once.

Happiness is all around us, but it often comes in small grains. When we gather it grain by grain, we soon have a basketful.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

The new is but the old come true; each sunrise sees a new year born. --Helen Hunt Jackson

We know that a totally new life can begin on any day of a year, at any hour of the day, or at any moment of an hour. That new life began the moment we decided to surrender and admit to powerlessness over a substance or an impulse. It began when we accepted the fact that we needed help and could receive it simply by asking.

Many of us used to choose New Year's Day as a time for making good resolutions and swearing off bad habits. When we failed, we simply shrugged and said, "Maybe I can start tomorrow, next week - or next New Year's Day." We were always going to "turn over a new leaf."

Now, in recovery, we no longer depend on doing it all alone. We know we can stay abstinent only by sharing with fellow members.

Action for the Day: Let me remember, each day in recovery is another milestone. I no longer have to use a calendar.

One Day At A Time

Lost Faith
"The here and now was good enough for us. The will to win would carry us through.
But then drugs and alcohol began to have its way with us.
Finally, when all our score cards read 'zero,' and we saw that one more strike
would put us out of the game forever, we had to look for our lost faith.
It was in A.A, that we rediscovered it. And so can you.”
- 12 Steps & 12 Traditions, p. 29

Thought to Ponder
Faith is our greatest gift; its sharing with others our greatest responsibility.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Make new progress
by Ralph Marston

After disappointment, take positive action. After success and achievement, take positive action.

What matters now is not what has already happened. What matters now is that you can focus your energy, your awareness to make new progress.

Discouragement is never the best choice, and neither is complacency. Whether you’ve failed miserably or succeeded spectacularly, don’t keep yourself stuck there.

This new moment glimmers with fresh potential and opportunities never seen before. Take up the unique challenge that is now, and make new progress.

Don’t let your ego lock you into a sad, small box where it’s all about you and what you’ve already done. Utilize your past not as a place of refuge, but as a springboard from which to jump into new levels of effectiveness.

The rewards and tokens of achievement are nice, yet you never stop longing for the act of achievement. Go ahead, satisfy that longing, for now is when.
