Today's Gift

You had better live your best and act your best and think your best today, for today is the sure preparation for tomorrow and all the other tomorrows that follow. --Harriet Martineau

The word "sanity" is derived from the Latin word sanitas, which means "health." Think of health as wholeness of mind, body, and spirit.

One way to achieve health and wholeness is by living one day at a time. To do this successfully, we need to realize we cannot undo a single act we performed or unsay any harsh words spoken in the past. No matter how much we may regret or re-feel yesterday's painful experiences, there is nothing we can do to change what happened. The past is forever beyond our control.

The same thing is true of the future. No matter how much we may worry and fret over it, very few of us can predict what tomorrow will bring. We can only prepare for a hope-filled future by living fully and confidently today.

TODAY is all I have. Let me make the most of it.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Whenever you fall, pick something up. --Oswald Avery

There was once a very active boy who fell and broke his leg. He could run again in the spring, the doctors said, but only if he stayed in bed for an entire month and kept his leg still. At first the boy fought the rule, but he found that the more he thought about things he couldn't do, the more tired and angry he felt.

His parents put in a phone by his bed and friends called every day. He'd never much liked talking on the phone, but he felt better when they called. He wrote letters and got replies, and was surprised at what fun it was. Usually, he didn't have time to write letters.

He learned to play chess and began to enjoy reading. His days were slower and quieter than he'd been used to, but he learned a month really isn't a very long time. When spring came, he was running again, a little more joyfully than before.

When we can learn to accept our troubles, we find, like the boy, that they are just packages in which new growth and discoveries are wrapped.

Action for the Day: If something unexpected slows me down today, I will find something that brings me joy at the slower pace.

One Day At A Time

Progress
"Day by day, we try to move a little toward God's perfection.
So we need not be consumed by maudlin guilt for failure to achieve
His likeness and image by Thursday next. Progress is our aim, and
His perfection is the beacon, light-years away, that draws us on."
- As Bill Sees It, p. 15

Thought to Ponder
Spiritual progress isn't what gets us sober, it's what keeps us sober.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Purpose that lives within you
by Ralph Marston

Give yourself a reason to live at your highest level today. Set a goal that compels you to pull the best values, thoughts, words, efforts out of yourself and to share them with all of life.

Hope is never lost unless you choose to ignore it. Choose instead to build each glimmer of hope into a spark, then a steady flame, then a brilliant blaze that lights the way forward.

Within you are specific desires, your own concepts of what can make life good. Bring those desires out into the open where they will engage your full attention.

Give yourself something good, meaningful, valuable, inspiring, satisfying to do with this day, with this life. Realize what a massive opportunity you have right now, and take it.

What a terrible shame it would be to possess great capability and to never use it. Give yourself a reason to make full use of all you have, of all you can do, of all you can be.

Focus the power of your life on the beauty and fulfillment of all you love. Give life the full benefit of the purpose that lives within you.
