Today's Gift

The block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak becomes a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong. That block of granite is often nothing more than a decision. --Thomas Carlyle

Trails through national parks and forests are often clearly marked and well-maintained. But sometimes a heavy snowmelt or downpour can turn a trickling stream into a tricky obstacle that needs to be navigated in order to continue following the trail.

When this happens, hikers can turn around and postpone their hike until another day. They can attempt to create their own trail by rambling through – and possibly destroying – delicate forest undergrowth. They can slog through the water, soaking their footgear and creating discomfort for the rest of the hike. Or they can utilize the resources available to them, such as by positioning large rocks as stepping-stones to cross the stream.

How you navigate the trails of your life can be seen in similar terms. You must choose how to navigate these trails, both in times when the footing is good and when it is not. Be like the hiker who thinks first about how to handle the challenges, so you can continue safely along your journey.

Today I will make choices that will keep me on the my path of life.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it. —Hugh Mulligan

We show self-respect in how we choose to spend our time. Do we give tasks the time required for our best efforts? Or do we feel unworthy of quality work? Do we have a right to stop working and just play? Are we worth spending time with - just ourselves, or do we feel meaningful time is only spent with others? Are we worth caring enough about to enjoy bathing, grooming, or getting haircuts? Do we care enough about ourselves to see a dentist or a physician when needed?

Choices about how we use our time are basic ethical and creative choices. Beyond self-respect and care, we need to put time into our day for nourishing and enriching our spirits. We do that by reading something thoughtful or meaningful, talking to a friend about the events and feelings of our lives, listening to music, fixing a pleasant meal, exercising, and giving unpaid time and energy to worthwhile causes.

Action for the Day: I will be grateful for the gift of another day, and I will live it creatively and respectfully.

One Day At A Time

Faith in our Higher Power
When World War II broke out, this spiritual principle had its first major test.
A.A.'s entered the services and were scattered all over the world.
Would they be able to take discipline, stand up under fire, and endure the monotony and misery of war?
Would the kind of dependence they had learned in A.A. carry them through?
Well, it did. They had even fewer alcoholic lapses or emotional binges than A.A.'s safe at home did.
- 12 Steps & 12 Traditions, p. 38

Thought to Ponder
The will of my Higher Power will never take me where the grace of my Higher Power will not protect me.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

From here to there
by Ralph Marston

See the reality of the situation, then see beyond that reality. See what is present, what is happening, then see what is possible.

Being positive about the future is not a matter of denying the difficult realities of the present. Rather, you must envision your path to a more desirable future and then have the courage to follow that path.

Be careful you don’t get lost in empty fantasies about what might happen. Be just as careful to avoid getting mired in dejection about your current difficulties.

Instead, get to work. See clearly where you are, choose specifically where you wish to go, and do what must be done to get you from here to there.

Don’t waste your energy wishing for reality to come to your rescue, or cursing reality as your enemy. Understand that reality is your workplace, and know that from any reality you can craft a beautiful and fulfilling life.

Accept and embrace the reality of what is, here, now, today. In that acceptance feel your own power, and engage that power to push your reality in whatever direction you choose.
