Today's Gift

To believe in something not yet proved and to underwrite it with our lives; it is the only way we can leave the future open. --Lillian Smith

Today stands before us, ready for our involvement. And it will offer us opportunities for personal growth and occasions to help another make progress on their path to the future. Challenges are to be expected. They further our purpose. They foster our maturity.

How different it is, for many of us, to look forward today with secure anticipation, to trust in what the future holds! We can still remember, all too vividly perhaps, the darker periods in our lives, periods that seemed to hold no promise; a time when we dreaded the future, fearing it would only compound those awful times.

The fear and the dread are not gone completely. They hover about us, on occasion. They no longer need to darken all of a day, however. We can recognize their presence as parts of our whole, not all of it. How free we are, today! Our choices are many.

I can step toward today with assurance, reaching out to others along the way, trusting that my accumulated steps add stability to my future.

Keep It Simple

If you go around thinking you are being cheated,
life becomes very unpleasant. --Felix Salten

Sometimes we feel cheated that we have been given this darn disease to cope with. Why us? Why can't we just be like normal people? Why did we have to get into so much trouble and pain as a result of a disease that hit us and skipped over other people?

Another way to look at it is: Hey, I'm really lucky. I have a killer disease, and I'm beating the odds. I'm getting healthier every day. I got my life back.

Another way to look at it is: At least this is a disease I can recover from.

"Any feeling of self-pity will disappear by the time we are working Step Nine." We may even be grateful for the path that led us to recovery. Do we believe it? There's one way to find out: We need to try it.

Prayer for the Day: Higher Power, help me to remember that there are a lot worse things in life than being in recovery.

Today's Action: What are five good things that I have gotten from recovery? Ten? I will write these down and refer to them when I'm tempted to feel sorry for myself.

One Day At A Time

Doubtless you are curious to discover how and why, in the face of expert opinion to the
contrary, we have recovered from a hopeless condition of mind and body. If you are experiencing difficult times and want to get over it, you may already been asking—“What do I have to do?"

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Do something with it
by Ralph Marston

Today greets you with opportunity, with frustration, with problems, with possibility. Do something with it, something positive and useful.

Don’t settle for someone else’s idea of what this day should be, or another copy of a day you’ve already lived. Do something unique, original, something that affirms the beauty and value of your life.

Today you have a schedule, a list of tasks, the usual responsibilities, things that others expect of you. Today you also have the chance to go above and beyond all that.

You’ve experienced in the past how well you respond to challenge, and how good it feels to do so. Today, find a meaningful challenge with which you can renew that great feeling through focused action.

You are designed, equipped, driven to achieve. Today, do what you are meant to do.

Dreams, ambitions, skills, experience, wisdom, love and courage all restlessly wait for you to make the next move. Today, do something with it all, and live your life at the highest level.
