Today's Gift

On any journey, we must find out where we are before we can plan the first step. —Kathy Boevink

Our lives in all aspects are a journey toward a destination, one fitting to our purpose, our special gifts, our particular needs. Each day contributes to our journey, carrying us closer to our destination. However, we often take a circuitous route. We get stranded or waylaid by our selfish desires, by the intrusion of our controlling ego.

We can reflect on the progress we've made toward our destination, the steps we've taken that have unknowingly contributed to our journey. Our easiest steps have been the ones we took in partnership with our Higher Power. It's in our Higher Power's's mind that our path is well marked.

We are just where we need to be today. The experiences that we meet are like points on the map of our journey. Some of them are rest stops. Others resemble high-speed straight-aways. The journey to our destination is not always smooth, but the more we let our Higher Power sit in the driver's seat, the easier will be our ride.

I will plan my journey today with my Higher Power's help, and my ride will be smooth.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

If we see only ourselves, it's a very lonely world.

We can learn the difference between taking care of ourselves positively and being so negatively self-centered that we are forced into solitary confinement, where we dry up for lack of genuine interchange.

We should know who we are. But we should also know who our neighbor is, and our friend, sister, boss, or child. To know other people and see beneath the exterior they present, we need to be comfortable enough with ourselves so we can relax and look and listen. We also need to be humble enough to realize we can learn from someone else and benefit from the gifts she or he brings to the relationship.

With growth comes new empathy and sensitivity. As self-will loosens its grip, we are open to the intuitive knowledge that enhances our interactions with those around us. Since our vision is less clouded by the problems of self-centeredness, we can see others more clearly and understand them better. Growth offers us a way out of loneliness into companionship and community.

Action for the Day: I will use my empathy to deepen my understanding of those who cross my path today.

One Day At A Time

Step Eleven
“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Them, praying only for knowledge of Their will for us and the power to carry that out.”

We recoiled from meditation and prayer as obstinately as the scientist
who refused to perform a certain experiment lest it prove his pet theory wrong.
Of course, we finally did experiment, and when unexpected results followed,
we felt different; in fact we knew different; and so we were sold on meditation and prayer.
- Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 97

Thought to Ponder . . .
Prayer asks the question. Meditation listens for the answer.

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Keep the richness growing
by Ralph Marston

Life is about the living, and you can do that right now. Fulfillment happens in the moments, and there’s always a new one arriving.

Sometimes events will unfold to your liking, and other times you’ll feel painful disappointment. In either case, in any case, a new day arrives for you to fill with purposeful positive living.

Through the years you’ve experienced life’s goodness, seen the beauty, felt the wonder. Now is your chance to create some more.

Whether conditions are pushing you forward or pushing against you, one thing is always true. You can act to make a positive difference.

Use the opportunity of this day to breathe new energy into your sense of purpose. Do something to show life how good, how rich, how fulfilling it can be.

Whatever has happened, whatever comes next, give your best to life. And keep the richness growing.
