Today's Gift

They felt frightened at being different from their brothers and sisters. It scared them to be different. —E. B. White

How ugly and wrong it makes us feel to be different: to be tall when others are short, slow when others are fast, black or brown when others are white.

The miracle, and paradox, is that everyone is different - and that is what makes us all the same.

When we think honestly about the people we admire - friends, sports heroes, actors, musicians, parents, teachers, mentors - we know that all of them, as human beings, not heroes, have felt out of place in their lives, probably many times.

Believing we are alone or different cuts us off from others. Climbing over that protective wall of "differentness" is scary, but it is guaranteed to set us free.

How can I let go of my fear "differentness" and honor it today?

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Because I have been athirst I will dig a well that others may drink. --Arabian proverb

Most of us do as we please. When we want to go we go; when we want to stay, we stay. We're accustomed to moving around freely and never even think about it. We trust that a door will open if we turn the knob and push. Unfortunately, we never appreciate what we take for granted, and we are less for that.

A young man at an meeting shared that he had just been released from prison. Upon release, the first thing he had done, he said, was to walk back and forth across the pressure plate of the bus station door. He wanted to be the one to make a door open and close. Onlookers had laughed at him, he said, but he didn't care. He appreciated the chance to move, to go where he wanted. Having known the hell of doors that won't open, he had an awareness that the rest of us didn't have. As his recovery continues, he will have much to share with people who've been trapped in prisons of their own.

Action for the Day: May I have the insight to recognize my own special qualifications, and the willingness to share them with others.

One Day At A Time

An Illness
An illness of this sort—and we have come to believe it an illness—involves those about us
in a way no other human sickness can. If a person has cancer all are sorry for him
and no one is angry or hurt. But not so with the alcoholic illness,
for with it there goes annihilation of all the things worth while in life.
It engulfs all whose lives touch the sufferer’s.

Thought to Ponder
Right actions for the future are the best apologies for wrong ones in the past.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Important people
by Ralph Marston

The term “important person” too often conjures up images of powerful politicians, business leaders, well-known athletes, entertainers or others whom we term as celebrities.

In reality, every person is important. Every life is important. None is more so than another. You are just as important as any familiar face on television. And so is your neighbor.

Every person has something to contribute to life. Every person is capable of making a positive difference. Each person in this world is special and just as deserving as any other person of the richness that life has to offer.

Certainly there are those who distinguish themselves, who inspire us, who lead us, who serve us, who teach us. They are not inherently better or more important that anyone else. Rather, they have taken it upon themselves to more completely fulfill their own possibilities.

Important people are all around you, filled with magnificent potential, just as you are. Recognize and respect that importance in yourself and others, act on it, and you’ll fulfill those important possibilities that are your own.
