Today's Gift

Keeping my mind active through good, intellectual discussions is important to me. Talking over golf scores doesn't take us very far. --Louise Jerome

Small talk is what engages us much of the time. There's nothing shameful about that. Many of the individuals we're in the company of are strangers to us. Inconsequential discussions seem safer then. Yet, keeping our minds active through thoughtful discussions about the world expands our knowledge and awareness. This exercises our minds in important ways. Just as muscles atrophy when unused, so do minds.

Many people shy away from in-depth discussions. Maybe we frequently do that, too. Oftentimes it's because we feel inadequate to others. Maybe we assume they are better educated. Fears of inadequacy are familiar to most of us. Will we ever learn that we are and always have been all that we've needed to be?

One of the good things about growing older, for some of us at least, is that we realize most worries don't materialize; most situations aren't as serious as we anticipated, and most people are more approachable than they first appear to be. Taking risks to share our thoughts gets easier the more we practice it. Let's not shy away from this today.

I'll dare to share my opinions today. A good discussion can energize me.

Twenty-Four Hours a Day

Keep It Simple

Love, a thousand, thousand voices,
From night to dawn,
from dawn to night,
Have cried the passion
of their choices
To orb your name and keep it bright.
--William Rose Benet

We are each in the midst of unique lives, and our choices are based on our own experiences, so it's only natural that they all be different. One of us may choose to go to jail for protesting nuclear weapons; another may choose to pray for peace. Both are working for the same goal.

It is a sign of our love to respect others' right to choose for themselves, even to make choices we may not agree with. Perhaps a brother or sister likes music we hate, or a son or daughter wants to wear an unusual style of clothing. How often do we, in the name of love, try to force our choices on others? When we give the gift of letting loved ones choose what is right for them, it strengthens our ability to choose what is right for us.

Action for the Day: I will honors others choices today, even if I disagree.

One Day At A Time

Service
Nor is this the only kind of Twelfth Step work. We sit in A.A. meetings and listen,
not only to receive something ourselves, but to give the reassurance and support which
our presence can bring. If our turn comes to speak at a meeting, we again try to carry
A.A.'s message. Whether our audience is one or many, it is still Twelfth Step work.

Thought to Ponder
Service is spirituality in action.

Daily Motivation

Excerpt of The Daily Motivator

Positive questions
by Ralph Marston

Your mind is built to seek answers. Just by asking a question, you engage your mental resources in finding an answer, or several good answers.

As such, it is important to ask yourself positive questions. Because positive questions produce positive answers.

Don’t focus your questions around why things are so bad or what’s wrong with the world or what’s the matter with you. Instead, ask yourself what the opportunities are, what things can you do better, and how you can make the most of the moment you’re in.

In every question is a presumption and an expectation of what kind of answer you’ll get. Make it a habit to ask questions of yourself that presume and expect a positive answer.

The person you listen to most, and trust the most, is you. The questions you ask yourself have a powerful influence on the direction of your focus, your actions, your outcomes.

What can you do to feel great about the possibilities of this day? How will you begin to bring the best of those possibilities to life, right now?
